After a recent update (done on July 1st 2008) i somehow got my X broken.
Hardware in use is an ATI Rage128 Mobility M3 LF according to Xorg.0.log as well as lspci.
When booting into X (by means of kdm), the login screen shows up incompletely (missing all the text and Buttons, as well as graphics, no background whatsoever apart from black).
Unfortunately i can't tell which packet caused this a i don't have previous versions of all packages that were upgraded then (time frame: between June 16th and July 1st).
Already looked for .pacnew and .pacsave files, but haven't found any related to this issue (as far as i can tell...).
Also checked Xorg.0.log for strange stuff. There are two warnings and one error to be found:
Warning 1 is about not finding Video BIOS in PCI space, which can AFAIK be safely ignored as there is no BIOS to be found on ppc.
Warning 2 is about AIGLX reporting that the driver says he wouldn't support visuals 0x23 through 0x32
The error states an invalid IO allcoation: end of block range 0xefffffff being smaller than begin at 0xf0000000.
Any hints on that??
Greetings,
Florian

Update:
sometimes the login window of kdm shows up, sometimes it doesn't.
No idea if that depends on something or just happens randomly though.
But there definitely is a cursor (probably due to it being hardware-generated) which actually moves as i move my finger over the touchpad...
Still puzzled,
Florian

This appears to be some kind of upstream bug, try to downgrade xorg-server and/or xf86-video-r128.
Also please file a ticket on our bugtracker (bugs.archlinuxppc.org) and include a Xorg.0.log and your xorg.conf

In case i can dig up some older versions, unfortunately i did a pacman -Scc just before that upgrade...
Already downgraded to xorg-server-1.4.0.90-11 and xf86-video-r128-6.8.0-1 (the one i made myself and know to work), but to no avail :-(
Any hint ion where to find older packages?

Well, got it working just a couple of hours ago. was probably due to pixman being compiled with AltiVec code, which does no good on a PPC G3...
But thanks anyways

I was installing over the weekend and I couldn't figure out why X wouldn't start. I would appreciate if you could post a link or send me the old packages I need to get things going.
Thanks for any help.

Well, right now it's working like a charm. Did a lot of up- and downgrading and compiling and reinstalling, and so on...
Mostly just to narrow down the issue and thus giving a bit back to the project.
As you asked: i got a Powerbook G3/500, also known as Pismo.
As Armin already pointed outr, it should be fixed by now, was due to pixman relying on AltiVec, which those G3's don't support (some sort of Vector extensions known as MMX or SSE in Intel World, Introduced in G4)...

Umm, same happened with the upgrade to pixman 0.11.8.
Funny thing is: after that i took the PKGBUILD and rebuilt it locally, and that version works flawlessly even though i didn't change a thing in the PKGBUILD (apart from bumping pkgver).
According to diff, they differ.
