Xorg problems.

I have some problems with my xorg file, and X will not start.  I am running an Ati x1400 using the new catalyst drivers, here is a copy of the xorg log and my xorg.conf.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: I fixed it by removing the vesa driver from the drivers folder, then by doing aticonfig --initial and renaming the new xorg.conf.fglrx-1 named by the aticonfig to xorg.conf and adding the lines

Section "DRI"
         Mode 0666
EndSection

After that I just typed "startx" and it worked fine.

Re: Xorg problems.

From what i can see on your xorg.conf it seems to be missing some information. There is no configuration for the monitors HorizSync or VertRefresh in the monitor section and there is no resolution modes configured in the Screen section. And further no default depth is set either. Ive never used the catalyst driver due to i have an old laptop whit an old ati but my xorg.conf looks something like this.

Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "Monitor0"
    Option "DPMS" "true"
    HorizSync 28.0 - 96.0
    VertRefresh 50.0 - 75.0
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    Device "Card0"
    Monitor "Monitor0"
    DefaultColorDepth 16
    SubSection "Display"
        Depth 1
        Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
        Depth 4
        Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
        Depth 8
        Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
        Depth 15
        Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
        Depth 16
        Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
        Depth 24
        Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubSection
    SubSection "Display"
        Depth 32
        Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubSection
EndSection

Oh and i noticed there was som problems whit the type1 font in your log file so it might be good idea to put a # infront of it when you start configuring the xorg.conf. Just to be safe yikes

Re: Xorg problems.

Did you creat the xorg by yourself, or did you have it automatically generated?  Try aticonfig --initial or Xorg -configure

LoadModule: "vesa"
...
Number of created screens does not match number of detected devices.

This is the main problem.  I'm not sure why vesa is loading, you probably want to stop it from loading.  As it is you are using 2 drivers to control 1 video card.

About the resolution and vert and horiz sync, they aren't really necessary, as they will be automatically detected once xorg initializes further.  (I don't have them in my config file).  It is also a bad idea to add the sync info, unless you know it to be true, otherwise it might damage ur monitor.

Re: Xorg problems.

Yeah I generated it with Xorg -configure, but it errors out and doesn't create one, so I stole the Xorg from the /var/lib/modules folder.

Edit: I removed the vesa driver from the modules folder in /usr/lib/modules/drivers but i still get the same error.

Re: Xorg problems.

Congratulations on fixing it!

Would you please post how you fixed it and mark this thread as solved?  (edit your first post).  That way people with xorg problems can find help.  Thank you.

Re: Xorg problems.

I wouldn't recommend removing the vesa driver from the module all together.  You should just check the top of your xorg config and remove/comment out the line that says 'Load Module "Vesa"'.  The vesa driver is the fall-back driver that allows you to use X11 if you don't have a better driver.  This may not seem like a big deal because you have a working catalyst driver, but occasionally, catalyst updates will break your system, and its good to know you have something to fall back on.  If you emptyed the trash can, you will have to reinstall (i think) xf86-video-vesa if you removed /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/xf86-video-vesa.

Glad to know aticonfig --initial worked for you, I couldn't remember whether it was that or Xorg -configure that did the trick for me.  Now that I think about it, I think the Xorg -configure is for getting the vesa driver working and setting up the mouse and keyboard (because I do remember using it).

Oh, almost forgot.  Welcome to Arch.

Thanks, yeah I deleted it from the folder and removed the reference from the xorg.conf in the load modules section.  I made a copy of it though, just in case I needed it again sometime in the future.  I think what I should have done (and will do if I ever need to reinstall) is run Xorg -configure before I install the catalyst drivers, I think  that might go a bit more smoothly.  Anyway, thank you all for the help.
