GDM was working fine until I (assume) installed x.org server and put xfree86 back on. Now, everytime I try runlevel 5, I get the GDM re-spawn from hell demon (not daemon).
I checked the xfree86 logs and they do NOT show any problems. The only place I can find a GDM log is in:
/opt/gnome/var/log/gdm/:0.log
/opt/gnome/var/log/gdm/:0.log.1
/opt/gnome/var/log/gdm/:0.log.2
/opt/gnome/var/log/gdm/:20.log
/opt/gnome/var/log/gdm/:0.log.3
/opt/gnome/var/log/gdm/:0.log.4
and, they don't say squat.
Any ideas?

Does it go to graphics for two seconds then back to text then back to graphics...
On my system, I had this problem after updating ttf-ms-fonts. GDM likes fonts to be readable by everyone but doesn't say anything about it in the logs. Unfortunately the MS fonts were installed as "r--------". After chmod'ing them to 444 ("r--r--r--") all was well again. So check the perms on your fonts.
Good luck!

You might be able to disable the respawning if you change your inittab for runlevel 5 to use "once":
x:5:once:/opt/kde/bin/kdm
Then can you see if there's any error output on the screen?

Thanks for the tips. I actually found some information in a log file that I completely overlooked:
from my `/var/log/errors' file,
Jun 16 11:57:49 localhost gdm[3216]: PAM unable to dlopen(/lib/security/pam_console.so)
Jun 16 11:57:49 localhost gdm[3216]: PAM [dlerror: /lib/security/pam_console.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory]
Jun 16 11:57:49 localhost gdm[3216]: PAM adding faulty module: /lib/security/pam_console.so
Jun 16 11:57:49 localhost gdm(pam_unix)[3216]: unrecognized option [service=system-auth]
* I don't have a "pam_console.so" file in that directory for some reason. I don't know if that matters. Like I said, the only thing I recently changed was going from X.org to XFree86, back and forth. I never changed any font settings or anything else.

You're a genius my friend. I had recently untarred some M$ fonts from a .tar file into `/usr/share/fonts'. I don't use the AL package, but I made sure the fonts were readable by "g(roup)" as well as owner.
I didn't have any problems until recently for some reason. Well, whatever the case, I made those fonts readable by "o(ther)" (anyone) as well with 'chmod 444" and it works fine now. I forgot that I was playing around with fonts when I was trying out the two X servers.

Glad it worked. What pissed me off was that GDM didn't say anything about fonts or file permissions.

Actually, demon can be written daemon too.
