OK folks, I feel stupid asking this question but each time I try to add a hard drive to my arch server, I get the following error at boot up any advice:
attempting to create root device /dev/sda3
/bin/mknod "/dev/root" b 8 3
/init: 1: cannot open /dev/root: No Such Device or address
:: Initramfs Completed - control passing to kinit
IP-Config: no devices to configure
kinit: Unable to mount root fs on device dev(8,3)
kinit: init not found!
kernel panic - not synching: Attempted to kill init!
The device I'm adding is a 200gb hard drive PATA drive, the current system is on a SATA drive. There are no other drives on the PATA chain. Any advice? I'm thinking maybe grub is calling it?!?!

Try labeling your partitions from a live cd, and use /dev/disk/by-label or some other form of persistent device naming. Sounds like typical linux kernel drive controller issues.

THanks for the reply! Ok, so I was able to configure the permanent names with no problems, the system is booted, cfdisk sees the new drive, but for some reason I can't mount it. It says that the device is not in mtab or fstab? Again thanks!!!
