suddenly half my themes don't work right anymore. the ones that don't work just default to some basic blue theme.
for example, here's candido-neographite:

and here's darklooks:
http://datadump.homelinux.com/~sero/gif … klooks.jpg
I don't know what those are, but you can see they're not graphite or darklooks!
the standard xfce4 ones seem to work, but not much else. I moved the ~/.config/xfce4 directory and restarted X, thinking that something got corrupted, but the problem persisted even with the newly created default directory. anyone have any ideas?

IHMO it has something to do with GTK engines. Try to reinstall them.

After you said that, I remembered that I had installed gtk-candido and murrine engines a while ago, so I thought that might be it. But I just reinstalled gtk-engines, gtk-xfce-engine, and just to be sure gtk-smooth-engine, and it didn't help.
I removed candido/murrine with -Rd, but I wonder if there's anything left over that's lingering that I have to clear out manually somehow?

The "-Rd' option generally sweeps all from system. You can make a little test - create a new account in your system and check what happens. If you get same thing, something's wrong with Arch.
By the way - do you get any errors in ie. Xorg logs? Maybe some libs are missing

good idea -- it works fine with a new test user. there must be something in my home directory screwing things up, but I can't locate anything yet. Like I said, I already tried moving the ~/.config/xfce directory and that didn't work. the only other ones in the new directory are .cache, .dbus, and .local, then when i started firefox it made a .gconf, .gconfd, etc. those seem suspcious, maybe the originals got corrupted.... testing...
[edit]: it was some kind of corruption. couldn't find the source of it, but making a new config directory solved it. thx
