Re: noob with gimp

Do you mean in the layers window? I remember a while back that there was a regression, I think maybe in 2.5.0 that had this behavior. But both the stable branch and 2.5.1 don't have this problem anymore.

I think there's some confusion going on here because we're not quite sure what you mean by "edited a photo to layer".  What are the exact steps you're doing, and what are the options called in the program?

Re: noob with gimp

ok, i might have not been so clear,i downloaded the arch logo pack and i wanted to put head phones on the arch,so i wasn't able to open the file,it was a svg,so i install mirage and it opened it to where i could see the logo, then it gave me the option to open with gimp,(which i was no able to do from the start).opened it and did my editign, also had my head phones already to go,well gimp offers to add a layer to the photo,(you know to blend two photos together),so i did but when i do that its black i can't see the photo,i've tought i did it right like what the manual says.even saved the svg file to gif, no difference.thanks for taking your time out for help.

Re: noob with gimp

Have you tried inkscape? http://www.archlinux.org/packages/895/
It will let you let you do whatever you want to the .svg. You can then export it as a .png, .bmp, etc or you can import it to GIMP (I haven't had much luck importing it myself).

This is a great website with inkscape tutorials: http://screencasters.heathenx.org/blog/

Re: noob with gimp

You're trying to edit vector graphics with a raster graphics editor. Inkscape is for vector graphics.
