kernel panic: cpu conetxt corrupt [solved]

Yesterday i watched a flash video, and suddenly my cpu usage got to a 100%. I closed firefox and the usage didn't go back to normal. I then logged off and logged back in the kde session, and everything was fine. I started watching the video again, and after a minute or so, my cpu went up again. Then i restarted my computer and on boot, after the filesystem checkups, I got this error:

CPU 0: Machine Check Exception: 0000000000000004
CPU 0: Bank 4: 3200000000070f0f
Kernel panic - not syncing: CPU context corrupt

I didn't know what to do. Then I reinstalled arch on another empty partition. But when i booted to the new installation, again the same error. I have a old windows xp installation on my system. When I boot windows, everything is fine.

Whats wrong? I hope its nothing with the hardware!

Re: kernel panic: cpu conetxt corrupt [solved]

try to boot the kernel with the nomce option

could also indicate defect/overheat CPU

regards

Re: kernel panic: cpu conetxt corrupt [solved]

with the nomce otion it just stops to boot after the filesystem checks.

edit: I think it's not overheating because I ran it on windows for a few hours and it didn't crash or nothing

Re: kernel panic: cpu conetxt corrupt [solved]

Another likely reason is defect ram. Would you please run a memorytest (memtest86+ can be found on many livecds) and a cpu-burn in test (e.g. prime95 on Windows)? Please run those tests for several hours to ensure they give us some reliable results.

Unfortunately these kind of errors are difficult to diagnose exactly (can be caused by software as well by hardware - e.g. voltage-fluctuations, bad memory I/O operations and so on).

Best regards

Re: kernel panic: cpu conetxt corrupt [solved]

I have read on a couple of sites that it can be a ram disfunction, so I have already ran memtest. It's runing for a hour and 15 minutes and it made one pass. So far no errors. I'll keep it running for another pass or 2, and post the results.
As for the processor. I'll try to get him running at full load for 5 minutes and see if it overheats or something. I don't think it will, becouse I ran cod4 on windows and it went fine.

BTW pheon, thanks for the effort.

edit: pass 2 on memtest. Still no errors.

The memtest is over and the ram is ok. Now i'm on windows and runing my cpu on 100% (with prime95). It's running like this for half an hour now, and everything is fine. No overheating or anything.

What now. I'm pretty much stuck and have no idea what the problem may be sad

Re: kernel panic: cpu conetxt corrupt [solved]

You could boot up your system with another linux install or livecd (if they start at all) and run mcelog to "decode" output of system and hopefully determine on that way what exactly causes the problem.

I assume you did not made any changes to your bios, hardware, software (arch installation)...

Best regards and good luck

Re: kernel panic: cpu conetxt corrupt [solved]

I tryed to boot without mounting the partition after witch the boot stoped, and it works. It boots the system without any problems.

Now I got a new problem :@
The partition witch hangs is the one where I keep all my data, and now I cant mount it. I tryer fsck on the partition, but every time it gives the Machine Check Exception error. I really need the data on the partition, so what can I do to get it back?

Re: kernel panic: cpu conetxt corrupt [solved]

Glad to hear of some progress on this probem.

If that partition is on another HD than the rest of your system, check the cable or try to plug it in another SATA-connector on the mainboard.

Can you access the partition from your Windows-install (or even another machine)?

You could also run a HD-Diagnosis tool (see vendor-page) to verifiy the HD is not nuts. I do not recommend running any "invasive" operations with this tools (like autorepair) at this time. Just check if the tool reports any problems or errors.

Regards

edit: do you use LVM?

Re: kernel panic: cpu conetxt corrupt [solved]

It works! I don't know how and why, but it works again. I can mount the partition, even on boot! I have backed up some of the data, but I'll wait till I buy a new hard drive to back it all up. Thanks for the help pheon.

Re: kernel panic: cpu conetxt corrupt [solved]

Glad to hear that! smile

Notwithstanding I still have a queasy feeling... this problem occured as sudden as it disappeared.

Doing a backup is probably the right step at this time wink
