How Does (Arch) Linux Work?

I'm curious to know how Linux boots. Just after the kernel is loaded, what does it start doing? What scripts start executing? What actually goes on?

I was reading about a distribution called SliTaz the other day, which is about half as small as DamnSmallLinux. I was thinking of trying to put together my own VERY tiny distro for the fun of it (with uClibc, busybox and so on). Can anyone recommend places to go to learn about this stuff?
