on my gentoo system i was just using wpa_supplicant and had it configured via text files, but i set up a nice gui this time around (xfce4 w/ compiz-fusion and avant-window-navigator) and i want a nice GUI wifi manager for it, i've heard of the following ones:
-network manager
-wpa supplicant gui
-wicd
i'm sure there are more, please post and tell me which one is your favorite and why or suggest one i havent heard of
thanks in advance

I use networkmanager for DHCP. As far as I know it doesn't work well with static IP configurations.

Im using
Netcfg2 whit Archassistant
I prefer this combo over others due to the Netcfg2 profiles, i swap wireless connections often.
And whit Archassistants super nice gui its extremly easy to configure a new connection.
Im to lazy to write the profiles manually in terminal ![]()

I use wifi-radar. I've never been able to get rid of the keyring popup when using NetworkManager and wicd just doesn't work for me. I don't swap wireless networks often enough to worry about getting them working, hence wifi-radar.

True, but im using it in Xfce4 and it works wihtout any problems, and the requirements are not a problems either.
Archassistan requirements
- arch linux distro !
- QT ( qt4)
- netcfg2
So even if it is KDE you dont need a whole bunch of kde dependencies ![]()

I have wicd set up but when I'm out and about (aka, not at home) it's a pretty even split between using Wicd to scan and connect, and just using the command line.

I was using NetworkManager now I'm only using netcfg2. Work perfectly I have no need for anything GUI

I am still using NetworkManager because I am too lazy to switch to netcfg2. Maybe when I next buy a computer...

I use network manager on desktops that have wired connections.
On laptops, I always get wicd. I know that when i get more into writing scripts, I can fine tune wicd to do exactly what I want easier, plus, its built on python.

i really dont want to have any qt apps running because then i will not only have to actually install qt4 but it will chew up memory running those libraries just for a single application, so archassistant is out of the picture. i ran wpa_supplicant on gentoo just with config files no problem, it worked fine for me, so i'll set up netcfg2 and see how that goes, thanks everyone for the replies!
