Mathematica Problem - Displaying Characters / Symbols

I managed to install Mathematica on arch and it runs fine... it just doesn't display some symbols  properly. The problem manifests itself when I type the  /  "division" character. Instead of a  /  , I get a box. Also, I've noticed that some outputs are just solid black strips rounded at the corners. Any tips for getting everything working?

Here you go:

If you look up "vectors and matrices" in the Documentation Center, you will see that these are supposed to be fractions.

And here is 1 / 2:

Update: reinstalling fixed the issue.
