Hi all,
I'm looking for a good hex editor. Anybody care to recommend one? GUI or console are fine.
Thanks!

GHex is kinda good.
Oversized link to image of GHex
Vim also edits Hex files.

I use hexcurse. But not extensively, so I don't know if it is good on features.

If you're using Vim, check :help hex
Otherwise, use xxd and import the file into your favourite text editor.

I consider myself a big Vim fan but I have to agree with this.

I was shocked and horrified about what vim tries to pass off as a hex editor.

Do you mean from the login terminal? If that's what you want, you'll need a non-GUI editor (someone correct me if I've missed something).
I haven't tried it, but Procyon mentioned hexcurse, which should work directly in a terminal (again, if I'm wrong, tell me).

if you do not hate wine, you can use XVI.

Bless is actually not bad either.
I can't imagine any language or platform related issues coming from that suggestion.

What does it do that Ghex doesn't? It even looks exactly the same!

I don't know that Bless does anything that Ghex doesn't do. I do know that I like the interface a little better when it comes to char searches and things like that. Ghex opens a search window, where Bless shows a search bar-like interface.
I know it's not a huge deal, but to each their own I guess... ![]()

I am sad about no one talking on wxHexEditor.

It uses 64 bit file descriptors (supports files or devices up to 2^64 bytes , means some exabytes but tested only 1 PetaByte file (yet). ).

This is a 2008 thread. 2008. That's 4 years ago now. Don't bump necros, and please use thumbnails. Closing.
Erdem, consider yourself warned. Since you're not even using a valid email, I'll just tell you this here, repeat behaviour will get you temp-banned.

Look from this aspect, from 3 and half years, no one offered a proper hex editor but every one talking about ghex in your thread.
Also your "ArchLinux" doesn't have any proper hex editor it there is no wxHexEditor. Your topic searching it's answer for from 3 and half years and I post the "right" answer, makes you upset!
If you don't want old topic bumped, than place a plugin that disables old threads. Ubuntu forums use that feature. Why don't your forum use it?
Also I think your eyes doesn't show you everything. For example you don't see "second post", which doesn't use thumbnails too. Why don't you "warn" that user and remove that screenshot?
Also my e-mail %100 valid and got email notification about your reply.
I discard your post and don't count myself as warned. But you can count yourself as a warned dear mod.
Think on installing old topic disable plugin...

I refer you to the forum etiquette, in particular number 10 and 23.
An auto-close plugin has been previously discussed but discarded. There are limited cases in which necro threads are useful. This isn't one of those.
Regarding the 2nd post - as mentioned this was 4 years ago. For tidiness I have removed it as well, but action will not be taken based on such an old post.
To explain my decision to close the thread (which I forgot to do, unfortunately, and will be doing now):-
1. This discussion is 4 years old. I don't think wxHexEditor even existed then.
2. Discussions on 'what is the best X and Y' are opinion-based, and while your 'answer' is probably a good option, it is by no means the 'right' answer.
3. Because of 1, 2 doesn't really matter. How likely is it that the original poster even needs this anymore (and unlike other technical threads, 'the answer will show up on google' isn't valid here).
Feel free to discuss this matter with me personally or with another moderator if you disagree.
