I am really happy about KDE4 entering Arch. Big kudos to Pierre for getting this done! ![]()
The point I wish to make here is, though, that this should have been announced properly. Most major package updates in [testing] are announced publicly on archlinux.org. Moreover, usually forum threads are opened in "Announcements, ..." in which users can report their experiences. I believe this should have been done and should be done as soon as possible. After all, this move will replace peoples' main desktops.

I'm sure there'll be an announcement.
I'm wondering who has taken the plunge, and what their reactions are.
I've been using tanis's packaged for KDE4.1rc1 with good results, but I'm glad to see KDE4 showing up in the official Arch repositories.

I was pleasantly surprised to notice this too. I was expecting to be getting it from KDEmod first, but looks like there will be a choice early on. Thanks~

It's no pleasure when it f*cks up your whole system. Where's the goddam warning!
Sorry, I'm a bit pissed right now.

Firstly, (wearing my moderator hat) calm down, a lot...
Secondly, (wearing my developer hat) you are obviously using the [testing] repo so you should be following the arch-dev-public list where it was stated what was happening. And if you are using the [testing] repo, don't blindly install updates. Know which updates are coming from [testing] and why. Packages are not put there for no reason...

If Gnome guys just like to bash KDE 3.5 for being with overloaded user interface then for 4 it's just true
A lot of usable good apps are missing too. Where for example is a lightweight mp3 player ? I did find only the Itunes clones there
Now i am looking at what Kdemod have and if its good
What i really look for is a good 3.5 fork which will live and last and not just be a legacy release

I am very excited about KDE4 in testing, I upgraded my KDE3 right away.
KDE4 is awesome to say the least, I for one am quite sick of all the people bashing it, KDE4 is a darring and bold move, and it will prove itself as one of the most progressive and influential moves in the hintory of the Linux Desktop.
Kudos to the Arch Devs, and my thanks for the KDE Devs!

My experience so far points in the other direction: there is less clutter. It seems to me that the devs are interested in sane defaults.

The app you are requesting did not exist in KDE3, either. Using a desktop environment does not mean that you aren't allowed to use programs that don't come with the official packages.

There is not such a big difference to Arch's packages yet. Currently, there are only some additional packages available, most in the extragear repo: http://kdemod.ath.cx/repo/extragear/i686/

That will never happen. Where would the man-power come from to develop a gigantic repository of applications (some of which have reached the end of their lifetime anyway) that are based on an outdated toolkit?
Have you even tried the new apps and functionality? If you don't like the looks and functionality of the desktop, you should probably wait for the plasma workspace to evolve further and alternative widget styles (actually, Qt-curve and Bespin are already available).

I un-installed kde3 with Rcs and installed the kde group being careful not to install any of the kde3 packages that came with the group. Kde4 really rocks. The missing apps will appear with time, but hey this is linux and there really are always good alternatives to kde apps that are not yet ported. Shaman (pacman frontend) is a real revelation. The packages are really good and stable at least on my setup. Kudos to the developers.
