alternatives to closed software

After having read the announcement of OO3b3, where IcedTea was mentioned, I started wondering that maybe there are more closed source packages that I'm using now and that have (working) open source alternatives.

A few threads under this new one, a discussion is going on about the subject, so that shouldn't be repeated in this thread. If someone knows alternatives, then please list them here, and if needed also a warning for stuff that is not (yet) working.

So:

Adobe Flash     ->     Gnash (compliant upto SWF v7 and heavily developped to accomplish better compliance to newer SWF-versions)
AMD/Ati driver ->     Radeon(HD) driver (support for 2D on all cards and for 3D on most not-too-new cards)

Any more?

Re: alternatives to closed software

swfdec is also a good replacement for Adobe Flash. Similar to Gnash, but some people find it performs better. Just like Gnash though it can have CPU and stability problems.

Others:
Skype --> Ekiga
Photoshop --> GIMP

flack 2.0.6: menu-driven BASH script to easily tag FLAC files (AUR)
knock-once 1.2: BASH script to easily create/send one-time sequences for knockd (forum/AUR)

Inkscape is a good replacement for Illustrator, but doing mesh gradients is tedious work. I hear it will be automated in the next release though. big_smile

Re: alternatives to closed software

I'm sorry I wasn't clear on this, but I'm not starting yet another 'windows app' -> 'linux app'. I would like to find out which non-free (closed) packages on my linux system could be replaced with free (open) packages.

THX!

Re: alternatives to closed software

We'd need a list of closed-source apps on your system to give you the alternatives.
