On July 29th the KDE team will announce the final release of KDE 4.1, the
first usable version of the fourth generation.
To make it possible for Arch users to join the release party in time, there
are packages for 4.1 in our [testing] repository. Please take this chance to
test those and report any packaging bugs using the bug tracker.
Before you update you should read the following hints:
* This update will NOT be smooth. Not all config files of the old KDE are
compatible with 4.1. While the old are kept in ~/.kde the new ones are in
/~.kde4. They won't be converted automagically. You could try to copy some
files manually and see what happens. This might work for kmail, konqueror
and others, but will break things for others. Maybe KDE will release a tool
for doing this.
* If you want to use the KDE desktop make sure you have kdebase-workspace
installed, which includes the kdm, the taskbar etc.
* if pacman wants to replace packages: Answer YES :-)
* At the time of writing not all KDE-based packages have been rebuilt for use
with new KDE or "legacy libs". If you cannot wait, installing kdelibs3
should make them work. But this will be fixed in the repos before things are
pushed to [extra] of course.
* If you start KDM with inittab make sure to change its path from /opt/kde to
/usr
* Don't force the upgrade ( -f); report a bug instead
* You might want to (re)move your ~/Desktop folder if you don't like that
folder view
* The first login takes a while; don't worry about this. It's creating new
configs etc.
* If you use an nvidia card, please read
http://techbase.kde.org/User:Lemma/GPU-Performance
* For a short overview about the new features read

I installed it on a fresh Arch install with KDE 4.1 only (no KDE 3.5.x stuff) and the packages installed perfectly on my box. Thanks for your work on it.

It works perfectly. I am typing this from the new Konqueror.
Thanks a lot!

Please check this bug in kdm: FS#11017
Thanks

So, will KDE4 replace KDE3, or will both be installed as separate package groups? Specifically, would I be able to choose which version to run and switch back and forth between them at will by running ./startkde3 vs. ./startkde4, having both selectable in the KDM, or something similar?

How does those packages compare to kdemods?

You may already know this, but with Tanis's KDE4.1 packages, you can indeed install KDE4 in parallel with KDE3, but, to be on the safe side, you should log in to KDE4.1 only as a different user. This has been working fine for me. As I've gotten more confident in KDE4.1, I've gradually moved user-specific stuff over from my previous (KDE3.5) user to my new user (KDE4.1). However, I can still revert to KDE3.5 if I want to. For a few days, I did continue logging on to KDE3.5 in order to do this or that, but now I'm always in KDE4.1, especially since pretty much all the apps I've wanted are now available for KDE4.1. (Even when a couple still weren't available, like Amarok, I could run them from KDE4.1 with no probs; Amarok is available now for KDE4.1, however.)
The effect is similar to what you're looking for with KDM. If I enter username1, it logs into KDE3.5; if I enter username2, it logs into KDE4.1 (as long as that has been the previous DE/WM used, that is).
I thought this was a good approach. You may be able to do exactly the same thing with the KDE4.1 packages from Testing. I don't know how they're structured, however.

is anyone else having the redland/raptor conflict?
both provide libraptor and are both needed by different kde4 apps

I started by installing the Arch [testing] KDE packages. Afterwords, I gave KDEmod a try, but came back to the previous KDE.
I didn't like some KDEmod dependencies. Specialy, being forced to install networkmanager with all its dependencies, and some other stuff I knew I didn't need.
KDEmod seems to use a little bit more space. So, at this stage, I feel the [testing] KDE cleaner, but that's just probably me, I guess

OK guys, it's in [extra] now. Have fun. ;-)

Please file any bug reports for KDE 4.1 you didnt open while it was in testing and help closing any invalid bug reports for KDE 3.X.Y.
Thanks

Simple question: How can I do to ignore any KDE package update from now on? I just tried 'pacman -Syu' with kdemod3 installed and some conflicts appeared. I really don't want to mess everything up. Once I have the time I'll make a clean KDE4 install, but not yet. Thanks.

if am using kde4 from tanis repos?, they are upgraded to this packages ???

Hey there,
am I getting this right, that KDE4 has replaced KDE3 completely in the extra repository? Will there be seperate KDE3 packages available or are we switching entirely?
Cheers,

KDE 3 has been replaced by 4.1. As usual we don't provide packages in different version (if not really needed). So there will be no KDE3 in official repos.
However: the guyes from kdemod want still provide KDE 3 packages.

Isn't this move a bit rushed? I thought that kde-4.1 would stay in [testing] at least until 4.2 is out, so that those who want to switch can do it and those who don't can stay with kde-3.5 for now. Why kill 3.5 when it's still alive upstream (3.5.10 will be released soon) and way superior to 4.1? Ok, 4.1 is not such an early kind of alpha as 4.0 was, but it must still be considered as alpha software by any standards. Only 4.2 will be beta quality and ready for everyday use by early adopters (such as the Arch community). Normal users should wait until 4.3 though.
It is great that you've been able to offer kde-4.1 so fast for users who want it. That's great work and much appreciated. But why push it to everyone? We have a [testing] repo. Let's make good use of it for these kind of very disruptive changes.
Just my 2 cents.

but they dont provide separate packages for everything, which makes for example kdeblutooth stop working because the update requires a kde4 service to be running which a kde3 system wont have. Had it been testing i would not have complained but its in extra so i should not have to be "that" careful with it.

I predict this thread might continue for weeks to come with people declaring desperately their own reasons for why KDE 4.1 is not ready yet and how you should wait until release X.X before it becomes 'usable' or 'stable' enough for them.
I predict that KDE 4.1 will enter [extra] regardless.
Finally, I predict that the more cautious people will gradually start using KDE 4.1 and realise that it's actually really really good and that Pierre's done a damn good job with his packages!
Also, it's ready, because my fortune cookie said so!
flack 2.0.6: menu-driven BASH script to easily tag FLAC files (AUR)
knock-once 1.2: BASH script to easily create/send one-time sequences for knockd (forum/AUR)

I'm sure that Pierre's done a damn good job with his packages. That's out of discussion.
Ok, I'll now go and do a clean install of Arch with KDE-4.1 on a new partition. I'll test the very basic functionality to see if it's there. Nothing fancy, just simple things like right-clicking in the taskbar and panel to see if they already have some decent configuration options, dragging and dropping my most used apps from the menu to the panel, adding some basic applets to the system tray (system and network monitor, temperature sensors...) I'll test Quanta+ to see if it's usable. Same with Amarok and Kopete... If this kind of simple and very basic things are in place, I'll reconsider my definition of 4.1 as alpha software. I hope I can be pleasantly surprised...

That is exactly what kept me from posting till now. I don't want argue against Pierre's work. I _really_ appreciate the job. And I _really_ think it's good that Arch has KDE4. I was anxiously waiting to try it out, so: thanks for packages, i *know* it wasn't easy.
But come on, this way the update is forced; when I do pacman -Syu, the last thing i want is having my DE replaced by another one (and that's exactly what happens). I think it's just plain wrong. Moreover, i am actually using Kdemod and nonetheless pacman says kdemod-kdelibs conflicts with kdelibs and asks me to replace it. So, kde4 or death.
The problem is: if I want to update my Arch, I'm going to have my DE changed, and its configuration irreparably lost (or at least completely useless). This "update" does not behave like an "update", IMHO. That's it.

Hello,
I've a problem now: kde4 doesn't appear in the gdm menu. How can I to fix the problem, please?
Thanks in advance.

In my opinion moving kde 4.x in extra and removing kde 3.5.x is a big mistake. I hope that it wont "destroy" the entire distro.

Destroy the distro? Surely no matter how passionate you may be about waiting or not, you're not that prepared to cry doom.
