I recommend using the inittab approach. However: the rc.d script is included in kde-common.

Sad day for Arch Linux. Very sad one indeed...
Geez, what's with all the drama? The kdemod/kde4 conflict will be fixed ASAP, and then you can all get your KDE3 from the kdemod guys. In the meantime, just don't -Syu if you don't want KDE4.

neowolf wrote:Question now though, should there be a kdm script under /etc/rc.d/ ?
Only if you actually read the announcement.
* If you want to use the KDE desktop make sure you have kdebase-workspace
installed, which includes the kdm, the taskbar etc.Edit: sorry that was bullshit. As Pierre said, the kdm *rc.d script* is in kde-common. Sorry again
No need for the apologies. I saw the init.tab stuff, but didn't notice the bit for rc.d. Though since it's recommended I think I'll give that way a try tonight~

Maybe you can try IgnoreGroup instead. It is documented in pacman.conf man page.

I haven't try this out myself, but maybe you could use IgnoreGroup option to ignore the entire packages in KDE group?
Put the following into your /etc/pacman.conf:
...
IgnoreGroup = kde
...
Should do the trick (I think ).

These are the ones I needed to put. Depending on what you have installed, it may differ a bit:

IgnorePkg = archlinux-themes-kdm
IgnorePkg = kde-common
IgnorePkg = kmplayer
IgnorePkg = ktorrent
IgnorePkg = kdelibs3
IgnorePkg = amarok-engine-xine
IgnorePkg = amarok-base

So that here are not only complaints: I am very thankful that you already provide KDE 4.1, as I just bought a new Laptop and this way I only have to configure it once (I installed Arch on it just the day, KDE 4.1 hit testing). And: It runs smooth and stable for me! Did not recognize more crashes than under KDE 3.5.9. The only thing that does not work good, are the effects, but that is surely a fault of my graphics-card. I primarily wanted to have a large battery-life and so went for shared-graphics-memory.
Whatever: Thanks Pierre for this great, very great work!

Thanks for the hint with the igores, they work for me!
I reinstalled kdemod and removed kde4.
I'll wait until the kde/kdemod thing gets fixed and then i give kde4 with the upcoming nvidia drivers a new try.
But nevertheless thanks to Pierre for this fast supply of the new packages.

Thanks for the list, I had to add the following:
IgnorePkg = kde-i18n-es
IgnorePkg = kde-l10n-es
IgnorePkg = koffice
IgnorePkg = libkipi
IgnorePkg = yakuake
Of course it all depends on the packages you use.

Thanks, it works great for me - upgraded from 3.5.9 without any issues

The decision of Arch devs to follow the upgrade path of KDE is no reason to abandon Arch.
It's not that big a deal to keep KDE3.5 from upgrading. You can block KDE3.5 from automatically being updated, then you can manually update any of its components whenever you please.
Like any good software, KDE is always evolving. The Arch decision-makers would be wrong just to say, "We want to freeze KDE in its present state."
That's an option for invididual users, and one real advantage of Arch is how much control the user actually has over what gets upgraded or updated and what remains the same.
Arch provides all the tools necessary to maintain KDE3.5x through the rest of its existence. All that's necessary is for someone to provide the packages or the PKGBUILDs.

And are the nvidia problems solved yet?
As you can read here: http://liquidat.wordpress.com/2008/07/2 … y-problem/; the problem is the nvidia driver, not kde.
Btw, KDE4.1 is working great for me (so far ), thanks for providing it!
Edit: Whoops, posted wrong link...

Well you know, when you are used to run dwm with mostly terminal apps, that is still a huge shock
But well kde 4.1 seems to run nicely and looks neat. Though I have probably seen only 5% of all the bloat I installed, so I still have a lot of work to do.

It did my system a world of good just to disable VSync under System Settings / Desktop Effects / General / Advanced Options. (I think it was Pierre who suggested this. I tried all kinds of other xorg.conf tweaks and nvidia-settings options, but this is the one that really helped (the others, I'm not sure about).
I'm running an NVIDIA Quadro FX 570M in a Thinkpad T61p.

You should definitely say N here! Do you really need all that? No wonder it eats a lot of disk space.
When installing the KDE group, I said NO to the following packages:
- kdeaccessibility (fortunately I don't need this)
- kdeartwork (I'm fine with the default artwork)
- kdeedu (I prefer other things to help me learn)
- kdegames (I don't care about games)
- kdepim (don't use it)
- kdesdk (I don't do KDE development, yet)
- kdetoys (not interested)
- kdewebdev (doesn't suit me)

IMO, the only problem I have with the move is that came _extremely_ fast.
The front page announcement that KDE4.1 was in testing was up for about 24 hours before it moved into extra. I was hoping to have a bit more warning than that -- the announcement didn't say when it was moving to extra. (I knew it was coming from the ML, but I completely missed the part when it was posted on the front page until it was in extra and I got a big surprise when I updated)
I guess I'll be moving to kdemod (3.5.x) sooner than expected on my main machine. I'll still have a second machine with kde4.1 on it, just so I know when it's ready to be my main DE.
