Re: no gui

Welcome to the forums.

Add kdm to the end of the daemons array in rc.conf. It works for KDE3 anyway.

Re: no gui

I dont know about KDE, do you have to modify your xinitrc file to load up KDE?

Re: no gui

I assume you just installed Arch and haven't had X working for some other gui yet.

Have you configured your X server yet?

What happens when you type startx from the commandline? (probably should eidt xinitrc first like XFire suggested)

Re: no gui

Tell us exactly what have you done.

Did you download and install X like Mcmillan mentioned(pacman -S xorg and pacman -S libgl (unless you're using Nvidia or ATI I think))?
Did you configure it with your video driver(download your video driver, Xorg --configure I think, and vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf)?
Then did you edit ~/.xinitrc (vi ~/.xinitrc and uncomment "exec startkde" and comment out "exec xterm")?
Did you add hal, fam, and kdm into your list of daemons(vi /etc/rc.conf)? By the way, you can use gamin(pacman -S gamin) instead of fam which doesn't require you to add it to your list of daemons.
More importantly, are you doing this as root or as a non-root user(it could be as simple as you loging in as root and it not happening because you edited it for your non-root user hehe)?

Telling us you see command line only doesn't really help because we don't know whether you even got it to work yet (as in make it work by typing in startx or xinit).

Personally, I like the idea of not even using X at all. Maybe you may want to start getting use to that? I browse the Internet using Links(pacman -S links), but I also do have Openbox setup (it's pretty) so if I am programming (I program graphical games or graphical tools at least and play a few games too) I can test my work of art. It's a good life style. I think you would enjoy it. Maybe you can try it out sometime after you do start getting your Desktop Environment to work(just for the sake of knowing how to do it and say you did it).

Re: no gui

I dont think .xinitrc affects kdm. It does not run from the user (probably from root)

Re: no gui

if .xinitrc is configured, then just enter username, password, then type startx to launch GUI.
I sometimes wonder why I use KDM. Its not really that much essential.

Re: no gui

Search /var/log/Xorg.0.log for errors and post them here.  The error code is

(EE)
