KDE4 firefox and thunderbird already running??

Hi,

I decided to try out the new KDE4 from extra.  Looks great.  I have a few questions;

where can you change the wallpaper?

Where can you specify a location for the executable for an application and have it show up in the menu system?

I initially ran firefox and thunderbird and  later when I went to restart them the system says they are already running and to either close the window or reboot.  Anyway I tried  going into icewm thru the KDM login and I get the same. If I go into icewm thru startx they work fine.  I have examined the 'ps xau' output but cant find any leftover processes. Any ideas??

Thanks

Change wallpaper: right click at the desktop and click properties
You can add menu entry using the menu editor by right clicking on the KDE kickoff button.

To kill firefox I usually do: killall firefox-bin

Hope it helps. Sorry can't give exact pointers as I am not at my arch desktop.

Re: KDE4 firefox and thunderbird already running??

I'll try those but as I mentioned, I had looked through the output from ps xau and could find no trace of any firefox programs running. Do firefox and thunderbird create any lockfiles when they start running??  (like pacman does)??

Thanks

It's just "firefox" now, instead of "firefox-bin".

And if killing doesnt work, look in your ~/.mozilla folder, and at the firefox/thunderbird subfolders. There's a file called "lock" you can safely remove.

I'll try those suggestions.

While I'm at it, is there a way to log in to KDE4 as root??   I ask because I thought part of the whole Linux freedom thing was the ability to do as you choose not someone else?

Yes. I think you have to edit kdmrc, although I'm not sure why you want to login as root.

Thanks for the information Peyton.  I don't do it as a habit but I do have several (3 ) systems in different partitions on this machine and sometimes it's just easier to be able to log in as root on each system if I have to do something that spreads across the partitions. That way I don't have to mess around with permissions and access rights etc.

As I say, not a habit - just want to be sure that if I need to do it that I can!

By the way, the 'lock' file solved my problem with Firefox and Thunderbird. (I had initially seached inside the wrong firefox folder and when I didn't see anything with 'lock' in it assumed it was something else.)

Thanks for the help.

Cheers!

Re: KDE4 firefox and thunderbird already running??

I have the same problem with firefox3 on kde4.1

Using 'killall firefox-bin' in konsole does work but it is a pain in the backside, this needs a proper fix, being able to properly close the most popular linux browser isn't too much to ask ! (having kde4 rage !!)

BTW

There is not a kdmrc file in kde4.1 so there is no setting to my knowledge to let you login as root through kdm. I've just had to use 'su' in konsole or 'kdesu systemsettings' and even 'kdesu konqueror' to do all my root bit's and bobs

Also had to add a /dev/sr0 line to my fstab to get dvd data disks to mount in dolphin and add extra bits to my xorg.conf to get the wallpaper and display correct as the kde "system settings" for display have no effect.

Finally, a video thumbnailer is desperately needed for dolphin

Re: KDE4 firefox and thunderbird already running??

Can you post the xorg changes and the line for /dev/sr0 please?

Thanks

edit  /root/.xinitrc and add

exec startkde

then a simple startx as root.

Re: KDE4 firefox and thunderbird already running??

I have tried the mplayerthumbs, the AUR build is now flagged old as it doesn't work with kde4.1. I'm also stuck getting the source to compile (see http://www.kdemod.ath.cx/bbs/viewtopic.php?id=931 )

As far as getting data dvd's to mount in dolphin, add this line to /etc/fstab
/dev/sr0 /media/dvdrom   auto    ro,user,noauto,unhide   0      0
then create the directory (mkdir /mnt/dvdrom)

my /etc/X11/xorg.conf changes

My original xorg was generated with hwd and worked find with kde3, but aaditions were needed to get kde4 to display correctly and get the proportions right .I have a 1024x768 screen so I needed to change my DPI to 75 also changed my default depth to 24, see the xorg arch wiki. Cuttings from my /etc/X11/xorg.conf below

Re: KDE4 firefox and thunderbird already running??

I thought I had rid myself of the firefox problem after a second re-install of kde4.1 after a deep kde3 clean, but the problem has come back after installing the GTK styles and Fonts thing from kdemod-extragear (i'm using kdemod4.1).

Seems's the problem started after I ticked "Use my KDE style in GTK application" and restarted

(edit)

Confirmed, after removing the kdemod-extragear-gtk-qt-engine-svn package and restarting the error has gone away

Re: KDE4 firefox and thunderbird already running??

"Where can you specify a location for the executable for an application and have it show up in the menu system?"

Right click on the kmenu button and choose "Menu Editor" wink

or (for a Xfce, fluxbox, Gnome and Kde3/4 compatible way)

If you go to /usr/share/applications/ you'll see lots of *.desktop files, open one of these in kate or kwrite, you'll see the construct is quite simple. Now just create one for your application and save it (as root) as a NEWAPP.desktop file in /usr/share/applications/, if all the parameters are correct it will appear in the kmenu after a restart. You can use the command 'locate MYAPP' to find the application, most will be in /usr/bin/

I have found it useful to install Thunar (pacman -Sy thunar) and run it with 'kdesu Thunar' as it is a quick way of getting around the root system and applying icons to .desktop files etc without the crash happy problems of running dolphin as root (kdesu dolphin) at the moment
