While trying to compile emacs, I continually ran into this problem:
Fail Log (output of makepkg)
Should I bug report, or is this a personal problem?

Do not try running makepkg as root. There is a warning at the very beginning of your logfile. Also you build from /var/abs directly. Try moving the stuff from /var/abs/extra/emacs and the big tarball to a place where your user has read/write access and try again. Perhaps you have to do a
chown <youruser>:users emacs
before (as root, from the directory above the one you put the files in).
BTW: as I wrote this, emacs compiled fine for me on i686
Do you depend on emacs 22.2? If not, try my package emacs-otf in AUR or emacs-cvs from community.

Well, I was just about to post how compiling this as a regular user also caused a fail, only at a different location, but then I noticed something odd about my account. It seems that I never added myself to the users group... whoops. So now I've got everything working. The purpose behind all of this was from trying to compile emacs --without-x.
Marking as resolved.
Thanks.
