If I enabled kde 4 desktop effects I can see some strange black screen zone effect.
If I open a video (with gmplayer) sometimes the video gets black.
Everything which moves (refresh) on the screen too fast seems to have this problem.
I played with kde advanced desktop settings but with no luck.
I'm using ATI video card with ati drivers.
Thanks,
Fabio

I have an Intel onboard graphic card and it also suffers from that when I use the OpenGL composite type. Go to the advanced options in the General tab of desktop effetcts and change it to XRender. In my laptop this is the only way to make it work. But at work i have an Intel board too and there it works OK with OpenGL... The boards are differente, of course, but the driver is the same. A pitty...

I'm exactly in the same situation, my works computer has an embedded Intel 945 VGA and works quite well with OpenGL, wobby windows and other effects without any problem. But at home one of my laptops is shipped with an Intel GMA3100, and if I set it to use OpenGL, the screen goes black, and have to wait the countdown for the image to be restored. Maybe is there a misconfiguration on my Xorg at laptop, or even the driver is buggy for than model

My screen goes black too when i enable opengl as compositing type (intel gma 3100)

Hmm... it might be a bug with KWin rather than 8.7 drivers if Intel has that problem as well...
I haven't been using compositing, so this is kinda new to me...
Now that I realize it, I can't run compiz either... I get:
compiz (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0
compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0
I used to know what this meant...

That's the output when I switch on the desktop effects and the black windows/shadows appear.

Xrender works, but slowly and OpenGL not at all. (with Intel X3100)

Same problem here with Intel GM965 and the normal intel driver.
I got the effects working without an issue in Fedora with KDE 4.1 on this machine (also using the intel driver), so it at least does work in principle...

Bump.
So is this an Archlinux related bug? I think some Xorg patch from archlinux cause theese problems. I have them too.
Activating desktop effects result in a dark, almost black screen. I can see some things like the description if I use the expose feature and I can see the shadows of the borders of the windows. Desktopeffects with xrender are working but slow. I use no testing or unstable version, standard KDE and Xorg from Archlinux.
I have a Intel GM965 (DELL says Intel X3100) VGA Card.

Update: I found this:
Of course it does: The problem is a patch applied to xorg-server Applying xorg-mesa-source.diff is causing the troubles. Maybe it is the same problem for FreeBSD maybe it is not

Update 2:
I finally found the right bug entry here: http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/11351
Here the same problem with a solution: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=53214&p=2
recompile xorg with a custom pkgbuild with disabled patch
