...not-too-broken things you overlook or work around. Here's one:
When I start roxterm, it starts under other windows, not on top. I don't want to have to go find the stupid thing after I start it. Can this be fixed?

mhm I don't see how that is related to Arch. Sounds more like a WM thing. Or am I not getting the thread? What WM are you using?

Yeah that's a WM specific thing. Tell us your WM and we can help

oh, sorry. I'm using xfce plus compiz fusion.
I left the question vague because I thought others might post about some little things that for whatever reason they live with but never try to fix.
I've never had anything else want to open under existing windows--just roxterm. Really I wish mrxvt had unicode support--I wouldn't have to worry about it.

urxvt has tab support. run "urxvt -pe tabbed".
ps: though i think you have to enable perl support in .Xressources.

I didn't even know you could use compiz with xfce. The last time I tried must've been a long time ago.

Great things come in tar.xz packages.

I have the same issue on gnome2. Terminal etc starts just underneath the main gnome panel on the top of the screen.
I know it's fixable since ubuntu has it working. Maybe one needs the gnome panel with ubuntu patches, available in aur?
I'll look into it.
In the meantime, please drop some info if you manage sorting it out.
Also with compiz, the gnome splash screen stays on very long unless I click it before compiz loads.
That is both using the ideas from here: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Compiz_Fusion#GNOME
As in, both the .desktop file and starting the icon.
Also, when I start the icon there is a glitch, that is everything starts, then dissapears for a sec and then compiz loads.
It ought to be simultaneous imho. Ubuntu's done it too, so it can't be too hard - is it upstream is another story.
a nail that sticks out, is hammered down.
aha.

xfce seems to have a composite manager built in. I don't know if it is compiz or not. Seems quite basic like xcompmgr.

I tried that for a little while. It basically just turns windows transparent when you move them. I have since graduated to full-fledged compiz-fusion. Roxterm staying on the bottom is probably a compiz-fusion thang.
