Petition to Suport KDE3.5.9... Vote YES to Proposition 3.5.9

KDE4 Sucks end of story mad It is a grate "Proof of Concept" But not even Beta quality
I have been pulling my hair out all week mad super mad

The reson why people like KDE is do to the fact that KDE3.5.9 is a Bullet Proof-Rock Solid DE. KDE4 is anything but. It seems to me they spent way too much time making that Window$ Like Bug reporter....

KDE Crashed!
Pleas find out what the problem is and report the Bug

Thankyou
Microsoft... I meen KDE team hmm

The wiget installer dosn't work, not that there are any helpfull wigets to install. If you rezise the wigets then they get all messed up and the Icons form the sys tray don't stay in the sys tray. If you say "OK I'll just use the panel roll "  your scrued agin. The panel is all messed up. If you don't want the panel to take up the whole screen... well then all the icon get messed up the Kmenu buton is 5% the hight of the panel and other stuff is sticking off of it. I don't know were to set the clock to 12am/pm. If I resize the panel way small and then bring it bigger KDE Crashes. If I move the system panel wiget some times the bar thing on the side gets stuck on the screen and I have to restart my computer to get it off. Opon restart some stuff is were I left it and some stuff is not. Programs radomly will not work i.e. they run, they are in the task bar but nothing is on the screen and I have to restart the computer and HOPE they work next time. My Cdrom dosn't work anymore!!! The only video codec is the 15FPS X11!!!    ON and ON and ON.....

So, Now Thank GOD I just made a back up of my root partition the day before. So, now I have restored my root partiton 3 ****ing times(NOW VLC WONT WORK AT ALL... 4 ****ing Times)!!! Each time adding more and more stuff to the IgnorePkg list in pacman.conf. Now, my system is frozen. I will never get a Update agin! If I want to install a new KDE based prgram I can't because I would have to install KDE4 crap that dosn't work! So, now I am like "OK I'll just use OpenBox" but waite... That is messed up too because the programs I run depend on KDE. The whole thing is a big snowball of Crappy Programs and Lib's. There is no end ! I mite try to Format my HDD and start all over from OpenBox on Up. But do to the resons stated before this would probaly be a wast of time. I could move to Gnome but I dont' like Gnome and I Sitll like KDE programs.

This whole thing is vary much like the Ubutnu8.04 Sucking so much.... The only real hope is to dich Archlinux and move to Gentoo.... Just do evreything myself.

All Of This could be solved by Archlinux just suporting KDE3.5.9.
So, if you hate KDE4 and you whant KDE3.5.9 to be suported or even if you like KDE4.... But think it should be suported to avoid all the problems

Vote YES to Proposition 3.5.9

Re: Petition to Suport KDE3.5.9... Vote YES to Proposition 3.5.9

Just use KDEmod. They have working KDE 3.5 builds now.    Or if you want old style KDE 3.5 packages, get the old PKGBUILDs and maintain a repo yourself.  Surely some of the other people who are of the same opinion will help you out.

Edit:  I am really tempted to just close this thread.  There are many other thread about peoples problems with KDE4.1.   I strongly suggest this thread is used to organize a KDE 3.5 building group so that it is actually productive in which case it will stay open...

Re: Petition to Suport KDE3.5.9... Vote YES to Proposition 3.5.9

Do any of you have the most up to date pkgbuilds (before 29.07) ?

I have backup of ABS tree from ~ 12.07

I also have a backup of the binary packages themselfes from pacman cache (there is a complete KDE 3.5.9 less the i18n translations which can be taken from kdemod)

You can use SVN to access older pkgbuilds, see here:

Re: Petition to Suport KDE3.5.9... Vote YES to Proposition 3.5.9

You can get the old pkgbuilds from repos.archlinux.org if I'm not mistaken.

Edit:  I wote no. kdemod got a kde3 repo for those that still want it.  Imo it is better to help out with that one than to make yet another kde repo.

Re: Petition to Suport KDE3.5.9... Vote YES to Proposition 3.5.9

At the moment i don't think we need a petition or switch to another distribution because we have the fantastic situation that kdemod offers kde 3.5.x. Let us enjoy the choice we have and accept that kde arch devs can't go back.

One note: Instead my own experiments with kde4 been absolutely frustrating there be a lot of other people here who enjoy the new version. So still again, this should be a perfect situation for everyone because you and me and anyone else can use the kde version what he wants.

Kdemod is different software than KDE and cannot be a replacement

What do you mean? Have you read their docs? There are clear instructions on how to install it. And it is meant to replace the monolitic kde packages by many individual packages, on for each application.

I dont know any patches in KDEmod, that will break anything for vanilla users.

Re: Petition to Suport KDE3.5.9... Vote YES to Proposition 3.5.9

As others said previously, you could use Kdemod3 packages from ther kdemod-legacy repository, for me worked better than the official ones.
I'm actually testing tthe 4.1 release, and I like it so much, althought keeping in mind that this release isn't enought mature, we can really see the way KDE4 is pointing to, even with all that bugs like the downladed plasmoids than never appears on the selection list, missing configuration pages on the system settings panel or other anoyances like strange windows behaviour with OpenGL on my laptop with Intel GMA 3100 ( my other laptop with an ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 works awesome with KDE4, extra effects included ^^)

Re: Petition to Suport KDE3.5.9... Vote YES to Proposition 3.5.9

it seems that most of Linux users are using their computers for fun/home whatever we call it
if somebody - like me in example - left MS Windows 3 years ago and is using his computer on daily work then the computer MUST BE STABLE and not NEVER_ENDING_BETA_VERSION

that is why I'm staying with KDE 3.5.9 till 4.XXXXXXYYYYZZZZ will be not only usable but also STABLE

this might either finish with changing DE or even blocking upgrades on Arch
fortunately there is kdemod3 which let me stay with KDE and Arch so far

P.S.
believe me I gave a try to KDE 4.x many times already but I cannot spend more time on finding which superb application is coredumping instead of working
computer for work, not work for computer wink

P.S.2
no offense of course wink

Re: Petition to Suport KDE3.5.9... Vote YES to Proposition 3.5.9

I've always found the kdemod packages to be better than the official ones...  Partially because of the splitting...

Actually, I've been using KDE 4.1 and my only problem is knetworkmanager hasn't completely been ported yet...  It's been stable for me...

I still would recommend the kdemod packages...  At least there, the maintainers only have one key focus... KDE.

Also, 4.1.1 and 3.5.10 in August...

Full ack!

That's the way Arch goes, if the program is updated, Arch provides the updated version. End of story! If the application is crap, it isn't the fault of Arch developers. Let's be glad, that KDEmod3 keeps being supported.

Best thing you can do now as user is filing bugs and providing the older versions of kde applications, like fatmike, me and others do in the AUR. Stop this stupid whining, it is so ridiculous!

Re: Petition to Suport KDE3.5.9... Vote YES to Proposition 3.5.9

well see my thread "kde4 and open source development". This is the way those things work. There's a 3.5.9 provided over there at kdemod, which I use myself on one machine.

Just cut it out, KDE4 won't be going back from extra, the developers stated this before. Do yourself a favor and get used to the legitimate successor of 3.5.9.
