MAC spoofing on wlan0

Whenever I try to spoof a MAC address on my wireless card (intel 4965), using ifconfig wlan0 hw ether 00:00:00:00:00:00, I get the error:

SIOCSIFHWADDR: Cannot assign requested address

I know the interface is down; how can I fix this?
