XF86Config-4.hwd

:? When I downloaded XFree86 hwd  configured it for me. I set up kde to a screen resolution of 800 x 600.  At kde login the screen resolution still seems to be 1024 x 768.
After login the kde set-up window is knocked to the lower right when the resolution changes to 800 x 600. I deleted all the resolutions in XFree86Config-4.hwd except
800 x 600. It is still happening? Is there some listing in XFreeConfig I missed?  Kde works fine. Just an annoying little problen, but I would like to fix it, it's just not right.
Also the color depth is set to 16mbs. I would like to change it to 32mbs. ( I'm dual booted and windows works fine at 32mbs)
                                                        Thanks -- Larry

Re: XF86Config-4.hwd

XFree does not use the XF86Config-4.hwd file. You have to copy the .hwd file to XF86Config-4, then edit it. From your post it sounded like you didn't do that.

Re: XF86Config-4.hwd

:? wdemoss - hwd is a directory. It contains two files:
                                                                                    XF86Config-4.in
                                                                                    XF86Config.in
Which one gets copied to where?
                                                        Thanks -- Larry

Re: XF86Config-4.hwd

the configuration file for X is in /etc/X11
and is called XF86Config
just try editing that file by hand now that there is something in it to start with.

Re: XF86Config-4.hwd

:? Cactus, thats the file I changed in the first place!!! It's /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.hwd. I removed everything but 800 x 600 under all depth ranges. The initial log-in screen is still 1024 x 768??? I rechecked and the changes I made are still OK. For 2 cents I'd remove hdw, XFree86, and kde; reinstal; and configure XFree86 myself. There's nothing to it.
It's just that there's probably an easier way to do it.

Re: XF86Config-4.hwd

remove the .hwd extension, XFree86 doesn't know about hwd.

Re: XF86Config-4.hwd

big_smile God Bless Dusty, Arch is going to give me religion. You nailed that one right on the head!!! I copied XF86 to the same name without the .hwd, removed the old file, and it worked like a charm!!! You saved me a lot of work.
