I have a laptop that was running Arch until recently when I put XP back on it. I had to run Micro**** Streets and Trips so it could provide GPS driving assistance on a family trip.
The receiver works with GPSd under Linux, but I can't find any half-decent linux GPS apps that... work. Has anyone had any positive experiences with linux GPS apps?

Have you tried that yet? It's on the AUR.

http://navit.sourceforge.net works really great here, with routing capabilities.
http://www.tangogps.org very good app, no routing but great in map display
Or you can have a look here: http://tuxmobil.org/linux_gps_navigatio … tions.html
There is a list of gps applications for Linux.

I do remember trying GPSDrive, and it took FOREVER to download maps (I opted to download all the counties in Texas).
It then became unresponsive, and I didn't have time to see if the problem was fixable.
I think that when I went to build Navit, it wouldn't compile from the AUR, I'll have to try that again.
I've seen TangoGPS, and I definitely want to try it, but without routing... it won't be very useful.
On a related note, does having a GPS receiver let me set up a stratum 0 time server, or is something else required?
