kernel 2.6.26 PAE on Asus P5B VM not booting

I have an ASUS P5B VM motherboard with 4G ram. With kernel 2.6.25 I recompiled the kernel with PAE enabled so that all the memory is available. However with kernel 2.6.26 after following the same procedure to re-compile the kernel with PAE enabled the kernel OOPS at loading udev events but the message passes so quickly that I cannot see what the cause was. If I disable the memory-remap in bios and boot with 2.6.26 without PAE the kernel boots fine and runs normally.

Is there any way to get PAE working for this combination or should just leave it alone and continue with the 2.8G that is visible without PAE?
