All my computers were off for more than five months while I hiked the Appalachian Trail. Got back sorta dreading the update I would have to do, but I decided to go for it and just do a -Syu and see what happened. Well, I probably upgraded every piece of software on both machines, and EVERYTHING works. No breakages, everything works as it did when I left.
All hail Arch and pacman and the devs that created them.

I took lunch at Galehead after climbing Lafayette and Garfield. On to Zeland for the night.
Only one female croo member there and we chatted a bit, but I forgot her name. That was probably the second best day on the trail, the best being the next day going up the Presidentials. Fantastic area.

There shouldn't be any reason to learn more editor types than emacs or vi -- mg (1)

That's a loaded question there. It took me two days over 5 months, but I took two weeks off to let some friends catch up. Also had 5 no hiking days and some short days into towns. Started off a little slow because there wasn't much daylight, and it was often below freezing, and I went straight from the couch to the mountains.
Once in shape, you can fly. 12 miles was a good day in the beginning, but once you are in shape that is an easy pre-lunch stroll.
I would say most people take 5 to 5.5 months to do the trail, depending on the weather.

12 miles a day? We did that in 3-4 hours when I was in the Army ![]()
But I suppose if I was hiking the Appalachian Trail I'd slow it down quite a bit and enjoy the scenery.

12 in the beginning, that took about 3.5 hours once I was in shape. I liked to do around 27 or so, depending on the terrain.
The trail goes out of its way to go up and down every rise it can possibly hit, even if it needs to do a U-turn. Its 97.5 miles of vertical elevation change over the course of the trail.
Also you can't beat chilling on top of a mountain in the middle of nowhere ![]()

The first long walk I ever did was a walkathon as a 10 year old.
20 miles took about 5 1/2 hours.
2 years later things went metric so they made a lot more money for the same walk.

It's not flat. 12 miles is good for the AT. Keep in mind the trail follows the Appalachian Mountains
