GDM and GNOME has died...

Hello! I'm currently posting via a Knoppix Live CD. This is because, after doing a system update yesterday, GDM and GNOME no longer work.

I mostly received kdemod-4.1 updates.

GDM crashes constantly now and if I just get to a prompt and run

exec gnome-session

An error message is displayed (can't make out what it is, it goes to fast) and then I'm logged out.

How can I resolve? I currently can't log into ANY desktop environment at all.

Re: GDM and GNOME has died...

Look into /var/log/Xorg.0.log, you should be able to see some error there.

Thanks for the response! I've looked at the log, but I'm afraid a large chunk of it means very little to me.

This is the log:

Re: GDM and GNOME has died...

Xorg isn't crashing. I guess it should be GDM or gnome-session itself that are crashing for some reason and throwing you back to login / restarting Xorg. Try not using GDM, install KDM, XDM or Slim.

Re: GDM and GNOME has died...

I also had issues with gnome after this morning's update. The touchpad of my laptop stopped working when gnome was starting. I tracked it down to gsynaptic. After uninstalling it everything works ok.

I do not know if this is related, as gdm and gnome started on my system, but perhaps the error lies in some related library.

Thanks for the response! I've looked at the log, but I'm afraid a large chunk of it means very little to me.

It won't help you in this situation, but since the Xorg.log always displays 'EE' for errors and 'WW' for warnings, you can easily cut out the large, irrelevant chunks by doing

# cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep '^EE'
and
# cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep '^WW'

I know it sounds silly, but I wanted to find how to combine these two commands into one, and I failed. Searching man-pages for grep and google for regular expressions did not help sad

Re: GDM and GNOME has died...

like have you updated nvidia or kernel? if you cannot log into any desktop fire up startx x from console try and get some error messages that way ... check you pacman.log for what you have recently installed/updated ...

We could help more but there is very little to go on atm

You can mount the Arch partition from Knoppix even chroot into it check wiki for more info

I think you're looking for something like:

grep "^(WW)\|^(EE)"
