Greetings from the Land of the Morning Calm...
Just arrived here in Korea for two years. While most aspects of life over here are absolutely wonderful, downloading Free Software while living in this Windows monoculture ain't one of them. Looks like my days of slurping down the latest kernel at 600K/sec from Georgia Tech's mirror are over for the next couple of years.
I have no knowledge of an Arch repository mirror anywhere in East Asia (specifically, Korea or Japan). Does anyone know of one that exists but somehow wasn't on the etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist file included in the install CDs for Overlord? After running the rankmirrors script three times, my fastest mirror is consistently the UM-Flint mirror (holmes.umflint.edu), of all places! Unfortunately, even that mirror is about 5x slower than the speeds I was getting living in San Antonio.
Additionally, if any of you fellow Archers out there are affiliated with a Korean university, maybe you can convince your friends in the IT or computer science department to set up a mirror. (The only distro I know of that has a repository locally is Ubuntu, and it is far faster) I am a fervent (albeit fairly recent) convert to The Arch Way and dread the prospect of going back to Ubuntu, especially for the home server I'm learning to set up. Please, help out a poor foreigner in need ![]()
