can't get my eeepc microphone to work with skype or twinkle

I'm trying to get both skype and twinkle set up on my eeepc, the speakers work fine and I can hear the test calls but I can't get the microphone to work.

I've used alsamixer to unmute and turn up the volume on both the microphones and they are working because I can hear them looped back through the speakers. For some reason though neither skype or twinkle are getting any sound from the microphone. I've tried using default and the different audio in options in both packages.

Is there anything else I need to set up?
