upgrade issue
I went to perform the normal "pacman -Syu this evening and got a bunch of new stuff - in the past I just got a list of the upgrades, said yes, it worked. tonite i had to play quiz bowl with programs like libungif with extra/giflib, then it told me it was forcing 3-4 other programs to change as well, then advised to get the new version of pacman. what's up? I just like to use the computer, not spend hours figuring out what all this stuff is.
My files are backed up, I just don't like updating when I don't know what's going on? Any help?

You need to be more specific in your questioning. Posting the output you are asking about would be most helpful. Anyway, here is my summary of what is happening.
It is important to upgrade pacman on its own. That is why you are being asked to do it separately. libungif development has been superseded by giflib hence the replacement. pacman is just informing you about the change. Forced upgrades tend to be when version numbers are not upgrade friendly or for forced downgrades due to bugs in newer versions of software.
