A new convert

Hello all,

Just wanted to make a quick post thanking the developers (if they even read this).

I was a long time gentoo fan.  Recently there has been unrest in the gentoo community, and some of my updates were failing (running stable).  Nothing too serious and unresolvable, but made apparent the direction gentoo is headed.  I had been looking for something new, but have always disliked distros that force you to do things "their" way.  Just give me the linux shell and a repository, that's all I want.  Then I stumbled across Arch.  I've been using Arch for a little over a month now and I'm sold.

Aside from the simplicity, I forgot how simple binary packages make life.  Yeah, your system is not "customized" to your specific needs, but to be honest.  USE flags bit me in the ass more than they sped up my system.  Who here from the gentoo camp has ever updated qt, only to find an application needs it rebuilt with a new USE flag?  With Arch, if I do want to compile my own packages to have bleeding edge or obscure applications, the dependant packages all have the proper developement libraries installed.  Most of the time I don't even have to venture further than AUR.

So thank you Arch devels, Arch community, and everyone else that makes it happen.

PS.  Don't get me wrong I love Gentoo, just had to vent about some recent frustrations.  It's still a great distro, with excellent documentation, and a great learning experience.  I hope they can get back on the right track.

Re: A new convert

I use the Gentoo wiki all the time. Does that count?

Anyways, welcome to Arch. There is no turning back.

Re: A new convert

Welcome to Arch!
As a  gentoo convert myself, I can relate to the USE flag issues smile
