My card is NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200, Normally the default package 'nvidia' works fine. I updated, and lost support for OpenGL. I figured maybe nvidia dropped updating the geforce fx 5200, so I installed the nvidia-71xx legacy drivers. Well, they simply don't work at all, as soon as X11 loads, I get a complete freaze. What now?

Try nvidia-96xx.

Alright, that or i'll just downgrade my package. Anyways, since X11 is in the modules, it autoloads, whats the kernel parameter to force console mode? I havn't done it in awhile and forget >.>

init 3 if you load X through inittab.

I tried Ctrl+Alt+F5, but that failed >.>, as soon as X comes up my computer completely freezes
Anyways, I should just be able to add '3' to the end of my boot params to boot into init 3 right?

Yeah, but only if you start X through inittab, not if you start login manager in rc.conf (that's why I prefer to use inittab).

Well, I start through GDM, in RC.conf, how can I temp disable that so I can actually fix the problem >.>

Try passing 1 or init=/bin/sh to the kernel line and remove gdm from rc.conf. If it doesn't work, use some LiveCD (Arch's install CD should do).

Now I remember why 6 months ago I stopped using linux XD. Package hell... Anyways, tried the 96 package, still freezes when trying to do anything with OpenGL. I tried downgrading to my old nvidia package, and of course I had to downgrade kernels also(which I don't mind). Downgraded my kernel... "Error loading nvidia module... no screens found." So apparently it's not the nvidia package that is causing the freeze... not sure what the hell is going on >.>

Could be that either your video card or motherboard are dying...

Windows works and plays DirectX and OpenGL games fine, this only happened right after I did a pacman -Suy, Directly after I did that update, I tried playing one of my favorite games and the game would freeze before opening. So I rebooted, then Compiz-Fuzion wouldn't work. I seriously doubt it's my card or motherboard. I remember like a year ago, a kernel update killed alot of peoples accelerated graphics. I'm assuming it's something similar. I probably should've looked at what all updated, but I went to the forums first to see if anyone had any problems with the new updates, saw nothing, so I figured all was ok. I suppose I was wrong. Guess I have to either wait for the fix, or move on to a different distro. I love arch, but it seems like everytime a decent size update comes along, I'm stuck not being able to do my daily ruitines on linux.

Package `nvidia' needs to be rebuilded against the newest kernel (2.6.26.2). I took the PKGBUILD for nvidia & nvidia-utils (imho this one isn't necessary) from abs/extra, changed kernel version and package release number, built and install and everything is working just fine now.

Or wait few hours/days until the fixed nvidia packages will be built & synced to mirrors.

Well guys... I have a brand new nForce 780i mobo with a brand new 8800GT 512MB and I just did the upgrade to the 2.6.26 kernel + the new nvidia driver today and I have the same exact problem pretty much. I am using the Failsafe Terminal frrom GDM as I had previously had GNOME start compiz fusion at startup. When I login to gnome (Failsafe or Regular) it starts loading my applets and about half way through the entire system crashes. I cant even do Ctrl+Alt+F1-4/7 like I normally can to do some kind of recovery. Instead, I hold the powerbutton on my machine for 3 secs and try again. I can't have my system down for much longer, its really important that I fix this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
-Alec
[Edit]
Just read about rebuild being required for the new kernel from before I posted. Well I really hope they push it out fast and skip testing or something.

Same issue here, except with KDM & KDE4 instead of GDM and GNOME. Occured immediately after update which included kernel26-2.6.26.2-1 and nvidia-173.14.12-2. I downgraded to previous versions (kernel26-2.6.25.11-1 and nvidia-173.14.12-1) and all is well. I had to reboot into single user mode to get a command prompt (*sigh*), from there I did the following to downgrade:
# cd /var/cache/pacman/pkg
# pacman -R nvidia
# pacman -U kernel26-2.6.25.11-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz
# pacman -U nvidia-utils-173.14.12-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz
# reboot
NOTE: package names will be slightly different if you're using Arch64.

The nvidia package in testing is built for the current kernel (2.6.26).

I have a computer with a nVidia RIVA TNT2 Model 64 AGP video card and also have had the hang up happen when starting X using the nvidia-71xx package. What I did was boot up with an Arch Linux install CD to get to a console, so I could remove the "kdm" entry (for you it may be "gdm" or something like that) under DAEMONS in my rc.conf file to get a working computer. Once I rebooted and logged in at the console, I installed the "xf86-video-nv" package and changed the driver under xorg.conf to "nv" instead of "nvidia". This should work for everything except 3D accelerated programs for the time being.
I left my nvidia-71xx installed, so that when it has been fixed, it will be a simple fix of changing xorg.conf back to using the "nvidia" driver.
Hope this helps.

Hmm... well I thought about that. Although, I first tried downloading the PKGBUILD from SVN for the nvidia package and building it myself. Although using my custom build of the package, X doesnt start at all. So I reinstalled the package from extra and I am now back where I started. So I'm going to switch over to the nv driver for now. Disapointed though.. because I planned on playing Quake Wars tonight. Oh well.

hmm can't seem to install nvidia from testing, it isn't found . Odd, enough...

Someone should post to the mailinglist/flyspray to let them know this is a problem.

Sorry about that. It got moved into extra after all. I know it's not posted at easynews yet, but easynews is still syncing. Try a different mirror.

I also forgot to mention that I cant downgrade anymore because I already cleared my cache several times before posting in this thread. It didnt even occur to me when I did it.
[Edit]
Going to try build in testing now.

If anyone needs the legacy drivers, they're in the same directories of the links above.

Which version? I have nvidia-173.14.12-2, it didn't work for me, and according to ftp://ftp.archlinux.org/$repo/os/i686 it's the most recent version available. Is there a nvidia-173.14.12-3 available somewhere?
