A lot of Problems

to start : sorry for the bad english

Hi, i've been testing archlinux for a few weeks and today i've finnaly instaled it on my laptop, but now i'm having a lot of problems and i would apreciate some help. I don't know if it helps but  i've got a hp pavillion dv6675ep.

1- everytime i switch on the laptop it shows a warning that the session is starting in other screnn (ctrl+alt+F8) and in certains situations it shows this warning several times how do i fix it?

2-My primary DE is gnome and everytime i log in it shows me  a warning about a bug on the screensaver. I've tried to switch the screensaver but it akways shows that warning.

3- I don't have audio. I've installed alsa but i can't put my sound car working i've tried the alsaconf anda alsamixer but i couldn't make it work with none of them

4- I can't connect to the net by wireless i've tried to switch the "eth0" by "wlan0" on the rc.conf but nothing works, i've tried also the wicd but i can't make it run, i click on it and it just won't start

5- when before loading the gdm screen it allways shows a nvidia screen anda after that theres a "beep" i've been told that this "beep" it's from the bios, but i'm not really sure. Is there any way to turn that thing of?

6-How do i change the time?? i've searched everywere but i haven't figure it out how to change the time.

7-I can't make the quicklaunch buttons work :S

And i think that's all...
Thanks in advance.

How are you logging in?  Are you using GDM or are you running startx from the console?
My guess would be that an X server is starting and claiming the first screen before your logging in.  It's hard to know for sure without knowing how you have it set to log in.

3- I don't have audio. I've installed alsa but i can't put my sound car working i've tried the alsaconf anda alsamixer but i couldn't make it work with none of them

Are the modules for your sound card loaded?  What do you get if you run "lsmod |grep ^snd"

4- I can't connect to the net by wireless i've tried to switch the "eth0" by "wlan0" on the rc.conf but nothing works, i've tried also the wicd but i can't make it run, i click on it and it just won't start

Read the Wiki page for netcfg (or Network Profiles).

6-How do i change the time?? i've searched everywere but i haven't figure it out how to change the time.

I'm fairly certain gnome can handle it.  I don't have gnome running now, so I'm not positive where.  You can also do it from the command line using the 'date' command.  Just run 'man date' to see how.

7-I can't make the quicklaunch buttons work :S

What do you mean?  Do the existing ones in the gnome panel not work? Or are you trying to create your own?

Sounds to me that you are not too familiar with Linux and Arch, right? If you haven't read the guide already, some of your questions are explained here:

Did u add alsa as a daemon in the rc.conf file ? I was also not getting audio to work but after adding that daemon sound was normal.

About the wireless i've searched in this page http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wireless_Setup and i've already found the package i need but i can't install it :S i've always folowed this tuturial http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/install-tarballs/ but after i uncompress the packcage and change to the folder when i try to do #./configure it shows this

bash: ./configure: No such file or directory

.

About the problem with the quick launch buttons it's already solved i've used gnome keyboard shortcuts to configure them.

What is the file you're decompressing? If it's a package you don't need to compile anything, tar.gz just means it's a compressed file which the packages are as well. Instead use pacman to install it with the command pacman -U [package]. You might need some other packages to go along with it to make things work. If you tell us what network card you use we can make sure you have everything.

Re: A lot of Problems

I highly recommend that you read the beginner's tutorial/wiki mentioned above.

Arch has its own package management system.  To get ipw3945, run "pacman -S ipw3945" as root.

Did u add alsa as a daemon in the rc.conf file ? I was also not getting audio to work but after adding that daemon sound was normal.

Also check that your user is in the audio group, if not add it to the audio group:

gpasswd -a [username] audio

You will need to be root or use sudo.

CONNECTION="wireless"
DESCRIPTION="A simple WEP encrypted wireless connection"
INTERFACE=eth1
SCAN="yes"
SECURITY="wep"
ESSID=myessid
KEY="the wepkey"
IP="dhcp"

when i do "iwlist eth1 scan" i cant find the router and do ping but when the system is loading it says that eth1 is not a device :S

i've also tried this

# /etc/rc.conf
eth0="dhcp"
eth1="dhcp"
wlan_eth1="wlan0 essid MyEssid" # Unencrypted
#wlan_eth1="wlan0 essid MyEssid key 1234567890" # hex WEP key
#wlan_eth1="wlan0 essid MyEssid key s:asciikey" # ascii WEP key
INTERFACES=(eth0 wlan0)

but it doesn't work either :S i've also tried to install gui wireless assistents but most of them doesn-te load the gui. ex: wicd

any sugestions?

Re: A lot of Problems

if the wireless interface is labelled wlan0 i would expect you should have
at least wlam0="dhcp" in there i.e `wlan_eth1' --> `wlan0'

Re: A lot of Problems

wireless devices are labled as

wlanX

X - being the number of the device.

Re: A lot of Problems

but for example if i run "ifconfig wlan0 up" it says "wlan0: unknown interface: No such device"
if i do "ifconfig eth1 up" nothing happens
if i run "iwlist wlan0 scan" it says "wlan0     Interface doesn't support scanning."
while i fi run the same thing for the eth1 it shows me the details of my wireless network. That's why i've alwayas insert eth1 in the rc.conf instead of wlan0. One more thing i here

eth0="dhcp"
eth1="dhcp"
wlan_eth1="wlan0 essid MyEssid" # Unencrypted
#wlan_eth1="wlan0 essid MyEssid key 1234567890" # hex WEP key
#wlan_eth1="wlan0 essid MyEssid key s:asciikey" # ascii WEP key
INTERFACES=(eth0 wlan0)

shouln't I take the "#" from those 2 lines? and where it says "s:asciikey" should I insert the wep key ?

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wireless

everything you need is in this wiki, I suggest you follow it to the 'T' as it has worked for plenty of people before you.

i've already done all that before my problem is that i just don't understan dwhat should i put in the rc.conf so i can connect by wireless. If i use wlan0 in the steps of the tuturial on the wiki it shows me erros most of the times while if i use eth1 everything goes fine... i've already said that but i was told to put wlan0 on the rc.conf...

Re: A lot of Problems

By the way the ipw3945 is being replaced by the iwl3945 driver. iwl3945 is compiled into the stock kernel, but it needs firmware in the iwlwifi-3945-ucode package. It might be worth trying to see if the iwl3945 driver works any better.

That being said, I would think the ipw3945 should work as well. You're right to use eth1 for the ipw3945, though if you switch it does use wlan instead of eth.

One of the lines in your last post should be uncommented, though which one depends on the encryption you use. It looks like right now you have it setup to be connecting to an unencrypted network. If you want to use encryption then comment the line there now and uncomment the one for encryption.

The other thing I can think of is that iwl3945 needs a daemon to be running, so be sure you have ipw3945d listed in your daemons array. I think I was also expliciting listing the ipw3945 module to be loaded when I used it, but it may not be necessary if you're autoloading things. You can check with the command lsmod | grep ipw It should list things if it is getting loaded.

Re: A lot of Problems

CONNECTION="wireless"
DESCRIPTION="A simple WEP encrypted wireless connection"
INTERFACE=wlan0
SCAN="yes"
SECURITY="wep"
ESSID=myessid
KEY="the wepkey"
IP="dhcp"

This shouldn't be in your rc.conf.  Put this in /etc/network.d/wireless. Then make end of your rc.conf look like this:

HOSTNAME="myhost"

eth0="dhcp"
INTERFACES=(!eth0)

NETWORKS=(wireless)

DAEMONS=(... net-profiles ...)

Where the ...'s can be any other daemons you need to start at startup.

This set up will have ethernet disabled

Re: A lot of Problems

New problem... i can connect to networks using wifi radar if the network don't have any kind of protection. I realized today that i can't connect to networks with wep key :S

I insert the wep key in the  wifi radar but it doesn't seem to work :S
