I just installed Arch on my Laptop and have a Logitech USB headset /w mic. I can't seem to figure out how to use it with applications like UT2004 and Skype. I use KDE if that helps, I know the headset works because I can get sound with XMMS if I change the preferences (Logitech USB Headset : USB Audio (hw:1,0)) to use it. So anyway... my question is how do I let an application know I want to use my headset and mic, even better yet is there a way that when I plug in the headset only the headset is used for everything? I tried searching google, this forum and Linux questions already and found nothing.
TIA

I have that but thanks. I just need to know how to switch the default device from my built in sound in the laptop to the headphones. The headphones show up a new sound device, it used to anyway. I think the 2.6.7 kernel broke something it stopped showing up as a sound device. I think I will install suse on the laptop and see how they do it because it does work under suse 9.1 the way I want it too, so I know it's possible.

Hi ya,
Well since this is my second post and that im a newbi at arch I just love the forum since it have helped me out several of times, but I do have 2 questions.
1) I have tried to modprobe snd-pcm-oss, without getting any sound from my headset when tring out skype, and I dont get sound throgh my headset while using xmms, but I do get sound to my speakers. Fuse were talking about changing in the preferences (Logitech USB Headset : USB Audio (hw:1,0), but I cant seem to find it in xmms, wat have I missed?? What kind of module should I use?
2) When I have installed skype and added some of my friends to it everyting looks good after my login. But when I tring to call them I get "failed", why is that??
If some one can help me with my this, I would put on such a big smile on my lips that the whole world would see it.
Btw. arch is a very, very, very nice distro, which I just happend to stumble in to when I was problem searching for skype in order to get it to work under redhat (which I dont have any more, and RH is the only disto I have tried out. ).
cheers all archers out there

in XMMS ctrl + p will bring up the prefs then configure your output plugin for me its alsa. In the drop down menu you can select Logitech USB Headset : USB Audio (hw:1,0) or whatever yours is. You then should hear sound from the headphones, I can't do this anymore though I think 2.6.7 is broke or something.

Ok, well I didńt find it, which is really strange. Im running fluxbox with xorg and I thought I modprobe the right modules for my USB. I have used hwd -e in order to find the right modules...but...well...something is not working. I will keep trying and looking until I get some answer about this, when I do, I will send out a post.

WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE...ok, now I got it!!! Finaly!!! Ok, first time I did a bad install of alsa, so wat I did the next time was to follow the whole install + config. Now, my headset is working and I can use it whenever I like. I got it working under xmms + Americas Army. So, now I will try to get skype working, but I dont think that would be any probs.

So how did you get it to work with AA and everything, I figured out my problems and 2.6.7 + a NForce2 chipset. I found out when I connected the front ports of my USB to the mother board from the case and my nic wouldn't start because of an IRQ conflict. I searched google and found a suggestion to disable USB 2.0 in the bios and now my headphones & nic work again. It's a temp work around + there is a patch but I don't care about USB 2.0 so it's not worth the effort for me to recomplie my kernel with the patch since I don't have any USB 2.0 devices.

Ok, as I said I did a sloopy install of alsa, which means that I didnt go through the whole installation guide from: wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Alsa%20set … ed.
