Eclipse packaging suggestion

Hi all, I've done a system update today and noticed that pacman installed me Eclipse 3.4. Now I can't work with my PHP code, because PDT team hasn't prepared a stable release of PHP Development Tools for this version yet. I suggest to make separate packages like "eclipse33", "eclipse34" etc. so that one could make an important update when he is ready.

Re: Eclipse packaging suggestion

You could also download eclipse 3.3 from their website and use it instead of the package. Just untar it to a location and run ./eclipse

And FYI, you could have just ignored the eclipse update, too.

Re: Eclipse packaging suggestion

Yep, I did it in the past once for similar reasons: too big incompabilities between 3.2 and 3.3 and problems with Arch packages smile. I have to do it again now, of course, but meanwhile I ask for a more user-friendly Eclipse package that doesn't break everything with every bigger release.

Ad. package ignoring -> it's only a half solution. If there were more such programs, it would become too annoying, especially if someone waits for bugfix releases (and this was in my case, because my Eclipse 3.3 had problems with copying and pasting).

Re: Eclipse packaging suggestion

If things break when Eclipse upgrades, that's an issue for either the Eclipse devs or the devs of whatever breaks - PDT, in this case. Arch policy here gives the user the latest upstream release, and the tools to ignore that release if required. We are not going to provide official packages for multiple versions of eclipse, but you are welcome to create your own, and even submit them to the AUR.
