Re: Arch on Asus EEE 901

We need to get a better mirror for the eee packages. It is getting too much for Roberteks server.

Any ideas where to get a nice and good connected FTP server?

Yeah, I started downloading the 1G kernel about 8 hours ago, and it's still at 0%. I think I'll have to go with just trying to get the atl1e module set up for now. Just wanted to say though, reading over this thread I've been ridiculously impressed how chill and helpful everyone is!

The ACPI package should work but the kernel on AUR? I don't know

BTW I have the 4965 now but it feels like the card is quite unrealiable like it disconnects w/o saying to me a word because it tells me 100 % connection quality. No idea what's that is all about.

When I was testing with my friends 901 I had to do this to get disconnected:

$ netcfg2 -d wifi-home && ifconfig ra0 down

And this to connect

$ ifconfig ra0 uup && netcfg2 wifi-home

-steve

Doesn't work for me. Is there a difference between netcfg and netcfg2?

Try to download it manually with Downthemall. You will have to click Pause/Unpause several times, but it should work.

Re: Arch on Asus EEE 901

@Etuxia

Like I said use the wext driver instead of ralink legacy tongue Its how it worked for me.

@tehabe

I know what you mean with the 4965, I have it on my other laptop and it loses the connection in both linux and windows now and then. Even then I can be sitting with another laptop just besides, to the same net, but different WLAN card and that one is stable as a solaris server tongue
But the connection always comes back after a few minutes, longest Ive had is like 5 min break but that was an extreme.

I will send the card back and use my ralink card again. it worked well beside the suspend2ram issue which I solved

But the fast connection at boot I will miss.

Fast connection at boot? What do you mean, that it connected to ur preferred network fast? Cuz I am getting a link to my preferred wireless network asoon as I log in :S

And before I had a suspend2ram issue with my eeepc, but not anymore thanks to the new kernel robertek compiled.

Edit:
Also the 4965 has really crappy support for promiscious mode, I had a hard time getting wireshark to work on it even, but other than that is a nice card, I was thinking of switching card with that laptop and my eeepc due to the powersave mode that intel have in their driver, but I am better off trying to find another wireless card with low consumption and powersave mode then due to the connection probs.

Hmm, I had suspend2ram issues because of the Ralink driver, but I can't get Robertek new kernel at the moment.

The Ralink two runs to get an IP the Intel card had no problem with that. I don't if it is the router or WEP or something else.

Now I kinda hope for the driver from the rt2x00 project but who knows when that kernel will be in the main line.

I agree, I don't think it's a good idea to use AUR for the kernels...

I am having a recent issue where if I unplug from AC my screen blanks.  I've tooled around in the /etc/acpi/eee scripts but don't see anything that is forcing the screen blank.  Is there some configuration thing that I'm missing.  Has anyone else has this problem?

Thanks.

Re: Arch on Asus EEE 901

I'm having a very strange sound issue, it has been happening for a while and nothing I have done so far has helped.

Seemingly randomly, I will get a significant amount of static through the speakers and headphones when something opens the card, this continues until whatever was playing releases the card, volume control has no effect on it. This doesn't happen all the time, but once it is triggered, it doesn't stop until I shut down and remove the battery. It isn't always the same thing that triggers it, sometimes it is an emulator, sometimes it is flash, sometimes it is just changing the volume. I have noticed that not all programs are always affected by it all of the time, sometimes, after this starts, Audacious will be unusable due to static, yet Zsnes will be just fine.

Loading and unloading the modules doesn't help once this starts, as soon as the module is reloaded, there is a few seconds of static. A simple restart doesn't help, all power must be pulled before it returns to normal.

If this was a repeatable condition, I would have something to go on, but it seems to be very random. After reseting everything, I've played the same flash video that started the static and it works fine.

I'm hoping this is somehow software related, I really don't want to have to RMA my precious Asus, but I am fearing a hardware failure.

I experience the same thing... Sometimes... For me it triggers pretty regularly.

If I play en mp3 file in mplayer, it works without problems. But if I play an ogg music file, it starts... When I stoped the ogg file, the noise stops quite fast.

I belive it's a good idea to get a wiki or something. We can ask the archlinux admins or maybe I can set up one on the same server as I maybe can set up an mirror for eee-packages.

Good to see I'm not alone, I'll grab some ogg audio files, to see if that triggers it for me. Any specific sample rate or something that seems to cause it for you?

This file: http://kusinfilm.com/musik/kusinfilm-in … oer_os.ogg

It's a ok ogg file, it's not the same volume between right and left, but it sould not be a problem.

I just tried that in every player I have, it doesn't seem to be a trigger for me.

I've emailed Asus too, hopefully they have something good to say.

If you got the noise and open the alsamixer, them mute the right channel. You only will get sound on the left channel, but the noise is gone.

Oh, you just reminded me of something, if I go into alsamixer and disable "iSpeaker", the static goes away.

Re: Arch on Asus EEE 901

@potterzot

That is usually because you have a power manager (like gnome-power-manager) and have checked the box labelled "Reduce screen backlight" under the battery tab, what that does is that it sets screen backlight to 0, so the screen is not blank, its just very very dark, if you try to turn up the screen brightness it should work.

I  had this problem too, so ive unchecked the "Dim screen brightness" under the battery tab and I set it myself in a terminal instead (xbacklight  -set <number of % that you want the backlight too(i.e 50 sets screen backlight to 50%)>)

Yeah, and so the sound at all. Yaou can mute in the alsamixer with m, and you can mutee a single channel with "," and ".".

Re: Arch on Asus EEE 901

I got the kernel installed, and it looks like everything is perfect except for my sound. The dmesg ALSA device list says no soundcards found, lsmod shows snd_hda_intel as being loaded. Right now the only module I'm loading is eee, and MOD_AUTOLOAD is on, though I have tried adding snd-hda-intel.

Thanks for any help!
