Core is not updating

The core repository does not seem to be updating and /var/lib/pacman/sync/core is empty. What's going on?
Running pacman -Syu claims that the core repository is up to date, but that is definitely incorrect. I've double checked with some of the packages on on my mirror's ftp site with that of pacman -Qi.

I did run pacman-optimize sometime ago, I'm not sure if that has something to do with this.

Try pacman -Syy to force a complete update.
