[SOLVED] Ssh

Hello,

How do I make my SSH online?  So I can login to my machine over the internet like a server?

Thanks.

if you're behind a router, you need to set the router up for service forwarding. check your router documentation for that.

Re: [SOLVED] Ssh

I followed the wiki and I'm getting the following:

ssh: connect to host **.***.***.** port 22: Connection refused

Ah, service forwarding.  I'm looking at my router settings.  What would the start and finish ports be?

Re: [SOLVED] Ssh

Assuming you want a vanilla SSH setup, and assuming that you already modified /etc/hosts.allow properly...

You want to log into your router and forward TCP packets from port 22 on the router to port 22 at your PC's IP address.

This will give you no-frills SSH access--once you know it's working you might want to consider changing the listening port on the router from 22 to some uncommon and high port number in order to increase security (because bots and hackers will sniff the common ports first.)

LAN Server
Enter the IP address of the PC or Server on your LAN which will receive the inbound traffic covered by this rule.

If I enter my ISP IP address here it gives me an illegal IP error.  What should I be doing?

That is the local IP address of the PC that will receive the call, and will probably be something in the
192.168.x.x range.

That also means that your PC must have a fixed IP address, be it by configuring your router to give
it always the same address, normally anhand the MAC address (better), or by reconfiguring /etc/rc.conf.

forward TCP packets from port 22 on the router to port 22 at your PC's IP address.

You should be using your PC's IP address (the one you want to connect to.)

Nice link loosec, could you add that to the Wiki entry listed by josomebody?

You should give the IP of the machine that has sshd running, you can find that with ifconfig.

EDIT: too late..
