Hi I installed arch a week or so ago then ran into this problem and didn't have any time at all to try to work through it, but my schedule's lightened up a bit and I've given it another shot. Basically, I'm trying to get wireless access on my laptop without using ethernet, not that I don't have access I just don't have any ethernet cables laying around. I managed to install ndiswrapper and am even able to scan and pick up information on my wireless network but when I try to connect using dhcpcd I get some weird error and it assigns me some nonsense ip address that's not even on my network. I've tried google and searching these forums, and am coming up blank. I appreciate any help anyone can offer, thanks.

OOH sorry, it's a broadcom one not entirely sure which model, dell sold it as "Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN Mini-Card"

Many broadcom devices are now supported natively by the kernel. Check lsmod for the b43 or b43legacy modules - if either is loaded, you have native support, and it probably conflicts with your attempted ndiswrapper configuration. More details here.

Neither are loaded, but b44 shows up a few times..

remove ndiswrapper and then do the steps from here: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wireless#b43
Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

I guess I'll do that if it's necessary, but I remember when I used ubuntu I used the native driver and fw-cutter and my connection was noticeably slower and less reliable than on windows, and I ended up having to use ndiswrapper to make it work properly. But that was a while ago, it may have improved since then. Thanks for all the help.

B44 is wired, not wireless.
Ubuntu's kernel is usually not really the latest, so you might have a better shot with Arch. Under any circumstance it is advised to take a native solution over a hack (which ndiswrapper really is, even if it's a mighty good one). So try the native way first, then go ndiswrapper, not the other way around.
