GVim can't start ...

Hi !
I upgraded yesterday from kdemod3.5 to kdemod4.1, and now i can't run gvim anymore .. don't know if it's related to the kde upgrade or to the pacman -Su upgrade ...

When i'm starting gvim, a window entitled vim appears, but it is empty ( all grey ) and i'm forced to click 15 times the close button to force the termination of the program ..
I tried to launch gvim from the command line, and gvim does not start, and there isn't any error message, i just have a

[chucky@chuckyspc ~]$ gvim

i press enter and nothing happens ..

Vim in commandline mode works perfectly, i tried to uninstall et reinstall gvim, to delete the .vimrc files, nothing works ...
Moreover my other gtk apps works without any problems ( pidgin for example )

Do you have any ideas ???

thanks

Re: GVim can't start ...

Hi, chuckychuck,

no kdemod here, but the following comes to my mind:

do a 'type -a gvim', just to be sure that you are executing the correct binary.

Do a

strace -f -o /tmp/out gvim

and on anoter command line take a look at the end of /tmp/out.

There will a awfull amount of information, but perhaps you can get some hints from there.

If needed, install 'strace with 'pacman -S strace'.

Not necessarely. Traces allways shows that the program is looking for possible packages that aren't really there.

The last lines indicate that 'gvim' is waiting for something that never arrives, but thats all I can make out of it.

My sugestion is to reinstall all of the gvim dependencies, namely:

'vim' 'perl' 'python' 'ruby' 'acl' 'libxt' 'gtk2' 'desktop-file-utils'

Its just a try, I am also lost.

Re: GVim can't start ...

Trying to run 'gvim --noplugin' or 'gvim -X' might shed some more light on the situation too. Although it might also show nothing new smile

Re: GVim can't start ...

Are you using gtk-qt-engine-svn ? If yes, disable it.

~djc

it works with "gvim -X" !!!!
it's weird isn't it ??

why would gvim need not to connect to an X server to work ????
maybe it's related to my xorg configuration ?

it also works when i uninstall qt-gtk-svn ( then no need to use the -X option )... but now all my gtk look really ugly :s
