new kernel26 and ndiswrapper [UNSOLVED -- Closed --]

I noticed that the latest kernel broke my ndiswrapper, so I decided to try to use my laptop without it using only the drivers.
Since I'm posting here, it is obvious I'm not succeeding lol
I'm very good with computers but the wifi thing always bites me in the bum for some reason ...

Here is what I did, can anyone point me in the right direction from here?

I installed the Atheros drivers ans utilities using pacman, then in my /etc/rc.conf I added the module my system uses, which is the ath5k and the corresponding settings for my network profiles.

MODULES=(MODULES=(ath5k ...)

NETWORKS=(renegade.default wlan0 renegade.eth0 renegade.humber)

Upon reboot I tested the status of things with hwd -e which reports

168c:001c Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. module: ath5k_pci
          AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter

so ... things seem to be looking up but, this is what iwconfig reports

lo        no wireless extensions.

wmaster0  no wireless extensions.

wlan0     IEEE 802.11  ESSID:"HumberPublic"
          Mode:Managed  Frequency:2.412 GHz  Access Point: Not-Associated
          Tx-Power=27 dBm
          Retry min limit:7   RTS thr:off   Fragment thr=2352 B
          Link Quality:0  Signal level:0  Noise level:0
          Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0  Invalid misc:0   Missed beacon:0

I also noticed that the LED indicating my WIFI connection no longer goes ON.

I have followed the instructions in the WIKI back and forth but to no avail, yet I think I must be very close but missing something... any help will be appreciated.

Re: new kernel26 and ndiswrapper [UNSOLVED -- Closed --]

Same here.
I've been using ndiswrapper for a long time without a hitch, and then the new kernel suddenly broke it.
After boot, everything works perfectly for a few minutes, when suddenly the internet dies.
After that happens, starting iwconfig , shows "lo        no wireless extensions."
and then gets unresponsive.
The same when trying to reboot the pc - the "reboot" command simply hangs and nothing happens (I have to hard reset the computer each time now).
Any help will be appreciated Arch community, I'm being forced to use my windows partition at the mean time :S

Sounds very much like a virus in the download!

Unlikely; if I remove ndiswrapper the problem goes away ... of course I do not have a network connection then. Aside from that, it seems a whole lot of people in these forums seem to have similar problems  after upgrading  the last kernel.

Re: new kernel26 and ndiswrapper [UNSOLVED -- Closed --]

I posted this in another topic but it seems to fit here as well.

I was having the same problems and here's what I did and now the problem seems to be fixed. I have been using my laptop all day yesterday and today and the system hasn't locked up.

1. Before upgrading kernel, I  removed ndiswrapper with rmmod ndiswrapper. I also did a pacman -R ndiswrapper
2. Then I issued the pacman -Syu command (using a wired connection of course)
3. Next, I did pacman -S ndiswrapper and then modprobe ndiswrapper.

Hopefully this works for you guys as well.

@dr573v3,

I dis as you suggested but not such luck.

Since no one seems to know the answer to my problem I'll downgrade to the previous kernel until such time I can figure out by myself what is going on or a fix to ndiswrapper becomes available.

Thank you all.

So nobody has filed a bug?

Tried rebuilding or updating ndiswrapper?

It looks like someone posted about an issue (even though it's not the same one) but it could indicate problems with ndiswrapper :

I'm unsure if this is a bug with ndiswrapper of an issue with the new kernel26. I'm aware of at least 3 other people (threads) with similar problems that happened after the new kernel upgrade.

In my case, after the kernel upgrade I had some "improvement" in so far that after loading the ath5k driver wlan0 would be ready to go without ndiswrapper; but it would not "turn on" the wifi card (the LED was always off) and therefore had no association.

After days poking at it I got tired and downgraded my kernel. In all honesty it could be ndiswrapper or just as well some change in the new kernel.

p.s. Yes I did try rebuilding and updating ndiswrapper to no avail. sad

Re: new kernel26 and ndiswrapper [UNSOLVED -- Closed --]

I have been having issues with the kernel/ndiswrapper update too.  These bugs seem to be more related to the problems I'm experiencing though:
