kde 3.2 Uggg

I'm getting the hang of pacman and totally like not dealing with dependency issues like I had with debian and mdk. Arch really rocks smile This is my first experience with kde 3.2 and i'm really dissapointed with it. I know this isen't specifically related to Arch in general, but I liked the older kde release tons better. The fonts in kde 3.2 are totally messed up. Maybe it's because I use a 800 by 600 resolution with large 21 inch monitors. Maybe font scaleing needs recalibrated or something. I never had this problem with the older kde. With the older kde font size 12 was perfect and with kde 3.2 font size 14 is almost too small. and even though I set them all to size 14 some apps open up with the menus using a font size so small i can't read them and I can't seem to change that within the apps. Also, it seems I'm forced to see menu bars in the K-menu like All Applications and Actions which do nothing at all exept to remind me what the difference is between an aplication catagory and an action catagory. Uggg!, with no option to hide those bars. They just take up space and the apearence is very annoying especially with a dark color scheme. How easy would it be to remove kde 3.2 and revert to kde 3.1? I don't see kde 3.1 listed in the repository/package listings. Maybe it's time to try and get use to a different window manager.

Check the DPI setting for your X Server.
Search for "dpi","xrdb" on ArchLinux forums for example. (xrdb is the tool for setting the DPI).

Also "man xrdb"... and Google wink

Re: kde 3.2 Uggg

Thanks for the replys. I learned it wasn't kde like mentioned above. I did fix my font problems by changing the dpi setting in my /usr/x11R6/bin/startx file and played around with the dpi= setting till everything looked right.  I also uncommented the ModulePath "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules"     in my xf86config-4 file and added FontPath "unix/:7100"  and changed the sequence so the 100pdi font path is listed before the 75dpi font path. Then edited the /etc/x11/xdm/xservers file and added -dpi 100 to the end of the :0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X line so it reads :0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X -dpi 100
Then I changed the etc/x11/fs/config file and chaged default-resolutions = 75,75,100,100 so that it reads default-resolutions = 100,100,75,75

After all that kde displayed fonts perfect but I still had a problem with a few gnome apps running inside kde where the fonts were so small i couldn't read them. especially in gimp. mozilla and firefox fonts weren't rendered correctly either. Mozilla was easy to fix by changing the dpi setting inside mozilla to 75 dpi. same for firefox. to fix gimp and other gtk / gnome apps I found out by creating a .gtk-2.0 file under /root and adding one line to it so it reads....  gtk-font-name = "Sans 15"

Then created another file under root called .gtkrc and added the following to it...

style  "gtk-default-iso-8859-2" {
       fontset = "-*-helvetica-medium-r-normal--15-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1,
                  -*-arial-medium-r-normal--15-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1,
          -*-helvetica-medium-r-normal--15-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-2,
          -*-arial-medium-r-normal--15-*-*-*-*-*-iso8859-2,*-r-*"
}
class "GtkWidget" style "gtk-default-iso-8859-2"

Now all gnome/gtk apps view fonts correctly under kde as well. Of course if I had gnome installed I might not have had to create the two above files, I'm not sure but I didn't want to install all of Gnome since I don't use it. I don't know if all this was a practical way to fix the fonts. Maybe there's a much easier way? I did a ton of searches and couldn't find anything simple. sorry for the long post I didn't save the links that helped me do all this or I would have just added them to this post.

I did give xfce4 a try and did like it. It's lighting fast compared to kde but I'm just hooked on kde but am keeping it as a backup manager just incase i totally screw up kde and still want a gui to log into. thanks for the link smile
