USB Devices in Gnome

Now the wiki has confused me here but the way i read it if i run Gnome and hal and fam started if i plug a usb hdd in it should just auotmount it? Even tho i haven,t got anything in Fstab?

Here I don't need fam, it is not started. Hal is enough for automounting my devices, I don't have them listed in fstab.
