The nvidia drivers are a breeze to install using the stock installer that you can download from the nvidia website. I think it's easier to deal with than the Arch packaged version.
Offline
But then they aren't updated automatically anymore via pacman -Syu, aren't they?

No, but you can just follow the nvidia website, or look for announcements here. If you that, you actually will usually get the new betas or other updates before a packager can put it in AUR or /extra. With most packages, I would avoid installing outside of pacman, but with graphics drivers, I think it's no problem. Somebody may want to correct me on that.

If you install them with something else than pacman (or one of its wrappers), nvidia-drivers are no longer "supervised" by pacman hence they will not be updated during a pacman -Syu.
Has anyone experiences with this driver and KDE 4.1?
watching someone else use your computer is like watching a drunk orangutan solve a rubix cube

I think these drivers are still beta.. at least the version matches the nvidia-beta package from AUR (which I'm currently using) and isn't listed on nvidia's driver page (rather the 177.13 drivers are).

no these drivers are final..they are not beta, but i think they will enter arch testing before they go into the extra..i might be wrong.
I am also curious if anyone has installed it on a kde 4.1 system

If you want the latest nvidia drivers, use ABS and simply bump up the package versions for nvidia and nvidia-utils.
Do not use the nVidia run script driver unless you really know what you are doing; it will litter your system with cruft files outside of pacman's tracking, and can certainly cause headaches for you later. You can also end up with garbage files in /usr/lib64.
Learn to use ABS for this. In fact, I would recommend always using ABS for all proprietary video drivers, period.

nvidia calls them beta (http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=118085) so i would call them beta too. ![]()

Okay, i installed the driver via ABS now (nvidia and nvidia-utils). My package has the version number "177.67-1", so that means as soon as an nvidia package with version number "177.67-2" or greater is in the official repo my package will be updated, right?
EDIT: Btw, I just tested the driver with KDE 4.1 and my Geforce 8600M. It's much faster now. (With the tweaks from this thread: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthr … ?t=118088) It's still far from optimal, though.
EDIT2: I just noticed that it works even faster now with Compositing type set to XRender instead of OpenGL.

what are the advantages and disadvantages of using either openGL or XRender can someone explain? Or they are some kind of competing standards?

I would like to say that a small version bump on the PKGBUILD using the ABS is all it takes. The latest drivers are working for me as usual. But, I am dissapointed at nVIDIA as of lately, they have nbot been showing any interest in Linux. I might soon change to AMD/ATI.

For showing no interest they develop a lot of drivers and have a nice forum for using it under linux. I trust them more than ATI but i can speak this easy because i have a 7500 and not one of this newer cards which causes more problems at the moment.

well i agree with kensai, and I dont feel they are developing drivers for Linux coz they want to do charity.
they need to deliver to their customers or else they can put a windows only sticker in their products and I wont bother.
I dont feel my high end laptop needs to work like crap , coz nVidia doesnt have good enough support team for linux, I dont mind them keeping their code closed but they need to deliver or else I vote with my wallet

Geez! People were saying the exact same thing about ATI just a few years ago. While ATI has made some decent strides in linux support, the support is still not feature-complete with their Windows drivers and has not proven any more stable than nVidia's. Why do F/OSS people have to be so dramatic about everything? If you want good support for Linux you can get any of the GeForce 7xxx series or ATI HD2900 series cards and it'll work fine. Just don't expect overnight results.
I personally hope ATI keeps making improvements but I don't think it will make nvidia improve driver development.

My 7800GS is also quite slow with KDE 4.1, slower than my 8600M GT.

For this new bashing about nvidia i personally have another view of this. But first i must say again that i use the nvidia drivers only on 2 pc (7500 and 4600) under arch linux and not on a laptop.
The story from my view is that the kde4 developers make a intensive use of a functionality which has never been used before in this way under linux and which was no problem for the original xorg drivers. I don't know what you works but if i would be the supervisor of the linux developers from nvidia than i would say that they have to test the driver even for the newest kernel and the newest xorg version but don't take a look for every beta or preview version of other applications which includes kde or gnome too. Employees don't works for nothing and so you have even to decide what you will do with your non-endless manpower. And if you look in the forum (http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=14) you will see that nvidia have recognized the problem, works on it and have a new beta driver with a better support for this problem. What can a company do more?
So i'm a little bit surprised that people have impatience for at example that the kdepim suite 4.1 don't use the new akonadi framework but have no impatience to wait for a new stable nvidia driver under kde4. And still again, we speaks about the first "ready to use" version of kde4 which was released since a couple of days and not years. But this be only my 2c. ![]()

I hope never -- these drivers don't work on my laptop with GeForce FX Go5200 card, for example.

That's because that card is now officaily a "legacy" card.
Use the 173.xx branch for those

oh so you mean to say release a powerful product, i mean tout it as powerful with all the features and then dont release good enough drivers for it for months, maybe you are happy with that equation.
The expectation is to get what you paid for I am not a open source zealot, for all I care Nvidia can keep their source closed, but I am unwilling to wait for months to get the FULL functionality from my card when it is worth half its price. What is so crazy about asking for accountability from a corporations...is it so hard to fathom?
Oh yes I will keep pointing it out till I wish or till my card becomes OLD and when I have to buy a new one I will take this into account. As some would say oh Nvidia doesnt have to care about all this bitching they don't have to care about linux etc etc. I am speaking for myself I may be insignificant for nVidia but I am not happy.
