I have to admit, my experience over the years with ATI drivers in both Windows and Linux has been that they are far worse than NVIDIA (crashes, install errors, not working as advertised etc.), to the point of sadly bypassing a 2600XT AGP card in favour of a slower, more expensive 7600GT. The 2600-series AGP fiasco for windows and Linux was not a good one for ATI - and fixes for *nix have been slower by months than for Windows.
ATI may be more (but note, not completely!) open source friendly than NVIDIA at present, but that hasn't (yet) resulted in better end-user experiences. One read of the forums at phoronix will attest to that (although we forum posters tend to represent the vocal minority with problems rather than success stories).

Changes in that number are due to updates in the precompiled kernel modules, or so I recall from reading the README some time ago.
The driver per se doesn't change so you don't need to update it in your system

Okay I commented out the md5sum lines but I got an error trying to start X saying this:
Aug 29 20:45:26 dabox NVRM: API mismatch: the client has the version 173.14.12, but Aug 29 20:45:26 dabox NVRM: this kernel module has the version 177.70. Please Aug 29 20:45:26 dabox NVRM: make sure that this kernel module and all NVIDIA driver Aug 29 20:45:26 dabox NVRM: components have the same version.I tried to remove nvidia-utils and install that from ABS too, changed the PKGBUILD to reflect 177.70 and commented out md5sums, only to realize it won't build without the 177.70 driver*oops*. Back on 173.14 for the moment.
Sorry if I'm making this more complicated than it should be but I haven't done this method before, appreciate the help a lot thx
Sorry to bump still stuck here ![]()

reboot or if you don't want that just reload nvidia module.
if you have gdm,kdm in rc.conf just /etc/rc.d/gdm stop and then rmmod nvidia, modprobe nvidia
if you have gdm in inittab just telinit 3 and then rmmod nvidia, modprobe nvidia and then telinit 5

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

Yes I did /etc/rc.d/gdm stop, init 3, rmmod nvidia, then modprobe nvidia, init 5 and /etc/rc.d/gdm start but then got the X crash ![]()

first you compile nvidia-utils and install that package then you compile nvidia and install.
if you can't i could upload packages.

That was part of the problem, when I tried to makepkg for nvidia-utils it said it depended on the driver.

You don't have the correct nvidia-utils-beta version installed.
The correct version has been uploaded to AUR as of the time of this writing.

I installed the 177.70 drivers and they work fine but the nvidia splash screen says they are beta drivers. Is that right?
