I assume you do have enabled it in the config (don't remember where it is exactly), also you do use a theme which does support icons?
Have you ever seen any icons, or have they never been there?

i use the default theme. they were there then all of a sudden it crashed and they were gone

weird. Is it by any chance related to the config files in your home directory (~/.e) ?

nope i wiped .e and it still was like this. i think its xdg but not sure
it appears that kdemod-legacy/kdemod3-kdeadmin stops working and i have to reinstall it. im not sure if thats the problem but its strange.
also i restarted e17 and it loads 3 xchats instead of 1. strange. hopefully its a bug that will be fixed next cvs

I'm not sure, it is still working here.
I'll upload an e17 update in a couple of hours. These will be svn based as they moved from cvs -> svn
