ALSA alternative?

Newbie question: Is there another way for me to get sound on arch linux besides ALSA?  I'm using a soundblaster soundcard and ALSA has a horrible scratching sound when the PCM setting is set above 50.  With it set too low I have to turn my speakers all the way up and I still can barely hear anything.

Anyway, what are the alternatives?

Re: ALSA alternative?

you can compile the kernel with the opensound system.....
menuconfig/
Device Drivers/
                       Sound/OpenSound/
                                                     Soundblaster wink

I guess you have to mute another channel. I, using a sb live soundcard, have to mute line in channels, f.e., and ac97 channels, that are available as I have ac97 on board, too.
