URL yanking:
Suppose I'm reading a README or a PKGBUILD or in IRC and I find a URL to a webpage that I want to visit, or a file I want to download. One way of doing this would be to grab the mouse, move the pointer over the URL and click and drag along it, or, if I'm lucky, double-click to select it. Then I'd focuse the web browser window and paste the URL to reach the website. Not very painful.
But there's better! With mouseless URL yanking, when I see a URL, I can press <alt-u> and the first url from the bottom of the terminal screen is highlighted. I can press <y> to send it to the selection buffer, just as if I had selected it with my mouse, or I can press <enter> to have it open directly in firefox (or whatever web browser you've set it to use). If the first URL from the bottom is not the one I'm interested in, I can continue pressing <alt-u> to cycle upwards through the URLs, or press <ctrl-n> and <ctrl-p> to cycle forwards or backwards. Pressing <y>, <enter> or <esc> exits the URL yanking mode.
It's easy to set up: install the package from the AUR, and you'll get instructions to add something like this to your ~/.Xdefaults:
URxvt.keysym.M-u: perl:mark-yank-urls:activate_mark_mode
URxvt.perl-ext:selection,mark-yank-urls
URxvt.urlLauncher: firefoxOffline

@Inxsible: Cool, thanks for sharing some of the experiences you had with terminals. I can understand now that it doesn't matter what terminal you use, the goal is to find the right terminal that works best for your needs, in this case, you didn't want a slighty bloated terminal that initially supports tabs, though urxvt can, you would have to set that up, so why bother? I want to hear more about this "screen" thing, how does it work for you. That's what I like to hear from users.

Here's a few links to get you started on GNU screen. An amazing program, IMO. I use screen to start up rTorrent, cplay, and pretty much all the terminal apps.

Awesome, I thank you guys again for the detail information on your personal work environment. I think I would like to switch to urxvt after all, even though there's nothing wrong with using my current terminal emulator.
@Wintervenom: Just tabs? Well that's pretty good considering the overly 20 times less CPU usage. ![]()
@muunleit: I like the setup! Kind of inspiring to use urxvt with the design of your layout. ![]()
@peets: Thank you again, I give that mouseless URL yanking a go. ![]()
@Inxsible: Sounds pretty good to me. Another cool thing to take advantage of. ![]()
