kernel/mkinitcpio on multiple systems

can I build a kernel/mkinitcpio to work on most systems?
want to be able to move a image around like 5 PC's with different hardware.

when I boot on different system

I get trying to create root device /dev/sda5

cannot create root device or what and throws me to a rootfs$ prompt I believe
