During an attempted upgrade of my i686 box, I noticed this error message:
"error: failed retrieving file 'archlinux-menus-2.1-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz' from ftp.ds.hj.se : File unavailable (e.g., file not found, no access)"
The same error message was repeated for another 12 servers.
After pacman had finished the lengthy process of downloading all applicable files, it said:
"warning: failed to retrieve some files from extra
error: failed to commit transaction (unexpected error)
Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded."
Well, what do I do? Or - when will the needed file (archlinux-menus-2.1-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz) be available on the various servers?

Patience! Wait for the mirrors to finish syncing.

Update your pacman database or wiat for your mirror to sync the updated database - the current version is 2.1-2

Well, I upgraded to the latest version of pacman before issuing -Syu (again).
What is "wiat"? And how do I update my pacman database by another method than "-Sy(u)"?

wiat = wait but spelled poorly
I meant do a "Sy" which it seems you have done . You can always try forcing a complete db refresh with
"pacman -Syy" but it looks like your mirror needs to sync a newer database which should happen soon.

OK
Well, in the meantime you've helped me get my main system (mostly) back in order, so I'll just wait.
Thanks again!

I waited about 36 hours and pacman downloaded 5 more files and went ahead with installing/upgrading 224 packages - including kernel and KDE 4. Whew!
The funny thing is that this was done without a hitch. Well, this is Arch, so perhaps not so funny
A real treat, but I still suggest people upgrade a little more often...
Many thanks, again, to everyone involved with developing and maintaining Arch Linux!
